<h2>European Athletics Championships&nbsp;</h2>
<p>As the jewel in the crown of events organised by European Athletics, the biennial European Athletics Championships are the showcase of the very best that the continental branch of the sport has to offer.</p>
<p>Hosts Italy had their best ever European Athletics Championships in Roma 2024, topping the medal table with eleven gold medals and 24 medals in total. This was the best ever European Athletics Championships by a host nation, surpassing the 20 medals won by Germany when Berlin staged the 2018 European Athletics Championships.</p>
<p>Among the many highlights from the host nation, Leonardo Fabbri and Gianmarco Tamberi broke the championship records in the shot put and high jump respectively while Nadia Battocletti sprinted to victory in both the 5000m and 10,000m. Lamont Marcell Jacobs retained his European 100m title and contributed to Italy's electric victory in the 4x100m while Yemaneberhan Crippa won half marathon gold and led Italy to the team title.</p>
<p>From an international standpoint, Croatia's Sandra Elkasevic won a historic seventh successive European discus title to become the first athlete in championship history to win seven gold medals. Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen also became the first male athlete, at 23, to win six gold medals at the European Athletics Championships courtesy of his third 1500/5000m double.&nbsp;</p>
<p>In total, an incredible 15 championship records were set in Roma 2024. <p><strong>To mark the 500 days to go milestone until the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships, young athletes from Birchfield Harriers lit up Perry Barr with a spectacular laser display at the Alexander Stadium on Friday (28).</strong></p>
<p>The athletes from one of the UK&rsquo;s most prestigious athletics clubs gathered to witness a striking Birmingham 2026 light projection into the Birmingham sky and mirrored on the infield of the athletics track, symbolising the city&rsquo;s anticipation and readiness to welcome the world&rsquo;s best athletes from 10-16 August 2026.</p>

<p>The sky projection of the Bull, continuing the synonymous association with Birmingham was visible up to 20 miles away from the stadium and concluded the celebrations of the 500 days to go milestone.</p>

500 days to go! Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships countdown is on!

<p><strong>European Athletics senior staff and key members of Athletic Ventures Local Organising Committee for Birmingham 2026 have spent three days together this week (3-5 February) on a site visit to the hosts of the next European Athletics Championships.&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p>With a little over 500 days to go until Great Britain hosts the European Athletics Championships for the first time ever, representatives from both parties explored key areas in an invaluable planning trip.</p>

<p>The group toured the Alexander Stadium, which also hosted the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and heard an introductory presentation from the LOC. They also discussed the timetable, technology, road races, marketing and event services.</p>
<p>There was also an opportunity to explore ideas in working groups for competition, medical &amp; anti-doping, IT &amp; technology, TV broadcast &amp; production, promotion, communications &amp; media operations, event services, protocol &amp; ceremonies and marketing.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>A historic first</h2>
<p>Cherry Alexander, Strategic Events Lead, UK Athletics and Vice President of European Athletics said: &ldquo;Great Britain has always had a huge passion for athletics, the British people respond in their thousands when major events come to our country and have helped create some of the biggest sporting moments in our history.</p>

Countdown to historic European Athletics Championships begins with Birmingham 2026 site visit

<p><strong>One of the standout moments from the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships was Ireland&rsquo;s memorable victory in the mixed relay 4x400m.</strong></p>
<p>And the man who set them on the way to glory, opening leg runner Christopher O'Donnell, features on the latest episode of <em>Ignite</em>, the mini documentary series on the European Athletics YouTube channel.</p>

<p>To seize their golden moment, they had to get the better of the mighty Italy at home, a Belgian quartet including world indoor champion Alexander Doom, a Dutch foursome including Femke Bol and Great Britain, silver medallists at the Budapest 2023 World Athletics Championships.</p>
<p>It has been some journey for the Irish and O&rsquo;Donnell takes viewers through the team&rsquo;s progress to the Olympic Games onto becoming World Athletics Championships finallists and finally European champions.</p>

<h2>Medal-laden 2024</h2>
<p>Last year was a memorable year for the 24 year old, who won the women&rsquo;s 100m gold at the Roma European Athletics Championships in a championships record time of 12.31.&nbsp;</p>
<p>She also won silver at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow and - with the expectation of a nation on her shoulders - won silver at the Paris Olympic Games, the only French athlete to win a track and field medal.</p>
<p>In <em>Ignite</em>, she opens up on her childhood and taking part in ice skating, gymnastics and basketball before her relatively late beginning in athletics aged 15. She discusses the challenging transition from younger age groups to senior athletics.</p>
<p>She also discusses her relationships with some of her European rivals, including Switzerland&rsquo;s Ditaji Kambundji.</p>
