Five European athletes became Ultimate World Champions on Friday (11) including Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Mondo Duplantis.
The Norwegian star, Ingebrigtsen, stunned in the men's 5000m as he ran the final 100m in a blistering 12.6 seconds to clock 12.59.24 and take the title.

He sat in the pack, tucked neatly away in classic Ingebrigtsen style until it was time to strike and surge past the rest of the field before taking the win by nearly a second.
Ingebrigtsen is also down to run again on Sunday in the men&rsquo;s 1500m where he will take on the last four world champions over the distance, Isaac Nader, Josh Kerr, Jake Wightman, and Timothy Cheruiyot.
Though it was Merlin Hummel who became the first European to be crowned Ultimate Champion when he took the win in the men's hammer with 81.46m.
Wet conditions made it tough for the entire field, with Hummel even taking a heavy tumble in the second round, but still it was all European athletes who took the top six spots.

Newly crowned European champion Bence Hal&aacute;sz took second with 80.30m, while Ukraine&rsquo;s two-time European bronze medallist,&nbsp;Mykhaylo Kokhan, took third with 78.80m. Yann Chaussinand, Volodymyr Myslyvčuk, and five-time world champion Paweł Fajdek completed the top six.
While in the first ever event at the World Ultimate Championships, it was Great Britain who took third in the mixed 4x100m in 40.26.
It was Europe&rsquo;s 100m champion Romell Glave who ran first, before handing over to Imani Lansiquot, with European 100m silver medallist Jeremiah Azu on the third leg before European U23 200m champion Success Eduan anchored them home.
Ukraine&rsquo;s Mahuchikh was back to winning ways with a second attempt clearance at 1.99m to take the win and to continue her reign as having won every major title possible.

Angelina Topić cleared 1.91m on her first attempt to take third place alongside Australia&rsquo;s Eleanor Patterson.
Back on the track, the Netherlands&rsquo; Nadine Visser took to the blocks for the 100m hurdles next to an incredibly stacked field that included the new world record holder, the former world record holder, and the 60m hurdles world record holder.
But the Dutchwoman ran a sharp race coming through just on the line to take third ahead of the Bahamas&rsquo; Devynne Charlton, said 60m hurdles world record holder, in 12.39.
A strong European contingent also took to the runway in the women&rsquo;s long jump, including the top four from the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships, Larissa Iapichino, Jazmin Sawyers, Hilary Kpatcha, and Agate de Sousa.
Once again it was Italy&rsquo;s Iapichino who came out on top, as her first round jump of 6.90m proved to be enough to take the win.
The European champion was borught to floods of tears once her win had been confirmed, soon also revealing that she had lost her grandmother earlier that day.&nbsp;

While Sawyers left it to the last round to produce her best jump of 6.78m which took her from fourth to an incredible second place finish.
Kpatcha just missed out on the top three with her best jump of 6.73m, while de Sousa jumped 6.47m for sixth.
It may not have been a world record for Duplantis in the pole vault, but it was certainly a gripping competition as Emmanouil Karalis pushed the Swede for the win again.

The Greek cleared 6.15m on his third attempt to mark six 6.00m clearances in one month, as well as his fifth time over 6.10m this year.
But it was still Duplantis who came out on top with 6.20m after failing all three attempts at 6.32m having secured the win already, with his new song Gold echoing round the stadium behind him.&nbsp;

Ingebrigtsen, Mahuchikh, Duplantis, Hummel and Iapichino become Ultimate Champions on night one in Budapest

On the penultimate night of the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships the men&rsquo;s javelin was heating up on the infield. It was a chance for Germany&rsquo;s Julian Weber to take revenge. 
Two years prior in Rome, Weber had been set to take the gold until Czechia&rsquo;s&nbsp;Jakub Vadlejch took the top spot in the final round with a massive throw of 88.65m. The defending champion, Weber, came so close to gold but he had to settle for silver.
So in Birmingham when his countryman&nbsp;Nick Thumm took the lead in the fifth round, it was an oh so familiar feeling for Weber. Except this time, it was him that would snatch the gold in the final moments, also breaking a monumental championship record for extra decoration.
&ldquo;No, I didn't think about that [the championship record], like at all,&rdquo; Weber said.
&ldquo;And also when the javelin went out of my hand in the last round, I didn't care, I just knew it was far. It's good and I just screamed, I didn't even recognise how far I threw so I was just celebrating.
&ldquo;I never thought about a championship record. I mean, I know I can throw far, but I didn&rsquo;t even know how far the championship record was.
&ldquo;It was such a pleasure to meet Steve Backley, the old owner of the Championship record, he's such a legend and it's a great honour.&rdquo;

It was a particularly special moment as Weber&rsquo;s feat also made him the first man to throw over 90 metres at a European Athletics Championships. Backley&rsquo;s previous championship record had stood at 89.72m set in Hungary in 1998, and despite his four European titles he was never able to break past the 90 metre mark at a championship.
When meeting Backley after taking gold, Weber revealed that he even joked with the Briton that &ldquo;he had it for a long time, so it was time it was broken&rdquo;.
In fact, Backley was commentating on the event, making it even more special for the javelin community.

<h3>Tough start to 2026</h3>
Though, Weber had a far from easy season building up to Birmingham 2026 as injury meant he had only competed twice this year before the championships started.
&ldquo;It [being injured in 2026] was incredibly tough, it was never that tough before,&rdquo; he admitted. &ldquo;I'm really happy the last years were without injury and that's the most important thing.
&ldquo;So that's why I am, or I was, also that good last year, but there's always something. This year especially some more than the last year, I had to work a lot and I had to be patient and I waited a long time to really go into throwing and into competitions.
&ldquo;It was so many months of just doing rehab kind of training and no throws, no heavy weight lifting or whatever. But in the end it was the right decision to just focus on being happy and I'm really happy.&rdquo;

<h3>Germany&rsquo;s love for javelin</h3>
Over the last four European Athletics Championships, Germany have won six of the 12 medals on offer for the men &ndash; showcasing themselves yet again as a dominant throwing nation.
They are so prominent in the throws that they actually had at least one athlete on almost all of the throws podiums, men and women. The only events they were missing from the podium for were the men&rsquo;s shot put and women&rsquo;s hammer throw, although they still had an athlete in the final of both events.
So there was much support from the throws-loving Germans when Weber took the gold once again.

&ldquo;I didn't sleep that much and that good [after the final], but it didn&rsquo;t matter at that moment,&rdquo; Weber beamed. &ldquo;I just felt awesome standing there on the podium for the medal ceremony and the people applauding.
&ldquo;I mean, the atmosphere in the stadium, it's so, so much, but I'm so grateful and I just feel incredible. And it's such a great feeling. To have had one really great throw, it's just amazing.
&ldquo;Yeah, I got it [the title] back. It was always the battle between me and Jakub [Vadlejch], he also did a great job.
&ldquo;This time it was my German friend, Nick Thumm, a young guy, so I'm really happy to share this place and the medals with him. And it was such a great competition, he also threw a PB [83.76m]."

“I didn't care, I just knew it was far,” Weber – first man over 90m in European Championship history

European marathon champion Alisa Vainio has announced plans to run both the Berlin Marathon on 27 September and Valencia Marathon on 6 December.
It will bring the Finnish runner&rsquo;s tally to five marathons in 2026 and eight in 15 months.
Her big breakthrough came at last year&rsquo;s Valencia Marathon, where she clocked 2:20:48 to set new Finnish and Nordic records.

She improved to 2:20:39 when winning the Sevilla Marathon in February, was sixth at the Paris Marathon in April in 2:21:35 and then went on to dominate at the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships, winning by nearly five minutes in a championship record of 2:22:26.

The Berlin Marathon has played host to more world records than any other major marathon, thanks to its flat and fast course in the German capital. The women&rsquo;s field is led by Ethiopian world record-holder Tigst Assefa (2:11:53).
It is another opportunity for the in-form Vainio to attack her national record and close in on a first sub-2:20 clocking.

European marathon champion Vainio targets Berlin and Valencia to close 2026

Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships gold medallists Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece and Amy Hunt of Great Britain have been voted European Athletes of the Month for August 2026.
Hunt won an unprecedented four gold medals in the women's 100m, 200m, 4x100m and mixed 4x100m at Birmingham 2026 and Tentoglou won his fourth consecutive European men's long jump title.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The Greek athlete also went on to take back-to-back Diamond League victories in Lausanne and Zurich.&nbsp;

On winning his fourth gold, Tentoglou said:
"This was one of the hardest finals I have ever done. I am good in all conditions but this wind was so hard on us long jumpers.
"This was not just a regular 8.40m jump for me. It was big jump. So I appreciate it a lot. This is one of my most precious victories because it is also a complex season for me. This is the start of winning golds again."

"Oh my gosh, I&rsquo;m over the moon. And to finish it off with some of my best friends in the sport.&nbsp; Me and Jeremiah (Azu) actually have the same birthday so we&rsquo;re kind of twins.
&ldquo;To do it all together is incredible, especially because that was the first time we kind of did that changeover about an hour ago in warm-up.
&ldquo;The time ever &ndash; and look how smooth it was. Such professionals. It was a bit like you know when you&rsquo;re queuing for a rollercoaster and you&rsquo;re a little bit nervous and you&rsquo;re seeing the drops and stuff.

This year was the year that many people finally became familiar with the incredible Audrey Werro as she stunned time and time again on the track, going third all time over 800m.&nbsp;
But here are 10 things you may not know about the Swiss star and reigning European champion.
<h3>Incredible junior career</h3>
For some, it may seem that Werro has appeared out of nowhere, but as a junior she impressed time and time again.
In 2021 she took the European U20 title at just 17-years-old, before two-years later going to successfully defend her title, a feat rarely achieved at the U20 championships.

Werro, in that time, also took silver at the 2022 world U20 championships where she went sub-two for the first time with 1:59.53.&nbsp;
Last year she also took the European U23 title in Bergen in 1:57.42 at 21-years-old to end her junior career on a high.
<h3>Standing tall</h3>
With beautifully long strides, it is clear that Werro is taller than many of her competitors, and at five foot nine she often does stand above others on the start line.
Her height helps make her runs look effortless, much like the Dutch star she recently beat in Ostrava, Femke Broeders-Bol.&nbsp;

<h3>Dabbled in the 400m</h3>
The Swiss star is also highly competitive over 400m, running her PB of 50.80 earlir this year in July at the Swiss Championships.
She also made up part of the Swiss 4x400m team that placed seventh at the Bergen 2025 European Athletics U23 Championships.

<h3>Long term coach partnership</h3>
Werro started the sport at nine-years-old after her school teacher told her she was talented and she always did well in cross country.
Once she joined Club Athl&eacute;tique Belfaux, Werro started being coached by Christiane Berset Nuoffer and is still coached by her until this day now.

<h3>Favourite athlete</h3>
In 2023 Werro told European Athletics that her favourite athlete is French middle-distance star Renelle Lamote, who has three European Athletics Championships silver medals.
Werro said she liked how funny Lamote comes across on Instagram, and the two have now raced nine times in total with the Frenchwoman winning six of those races.&nbsp;

<h3>Chose against US colleges</h3>
In her last year of high school Werro would have attracted the eyes of many US Colleges due to her incredible performances on the junior international stage, however she chose to stay home instead.
&ldquo;I prefer to stay with my club, my family, because I&rsquo;m really (happy) in Switzerland,&rdquo; she said in 2023.

<h3>Spooky encounter</h3>
Once when she was younger the Swiss star was singing in her room, alone, and she heard someone else also speak the words of the song.
The encounter left her to believe ghosts could be real.

<h3>Maiden Diamond League</h3>
On 30 June 2023, Werro made her Diamond League debut, placing sixth in Lausanne over 800m with 1:59.71.
Also in that race was the soon to be world champion Mary Moraa, and now very familiar rival and Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson.&nbsp;

<h3>World record holder - already</h3>
The talk may be about when Werro may break the 800m world record, however she already has a world record to her name.
In 2023 she ran 2:34.89 over 1000m at the Meeting Nikaia to break the world U20 record, which she still holds now.

<h3>Creativity off the track</h3>
Off the track, Werro&rsquo;s biggest hobbies include reading and art with science books being her current interest, although that often changes.
But she also admitted that she doesn&rsquo;t go a day without singing and her favourite song for karaoke is Rihanna&rsquo;s Love On The Brain.

European men&rsquo;s discus champion Kristjan Ceh maintained his superb form with another 70-metre throw to win at the Dinamo Meet in Zagreb, Croatia, on Wednesday (8).
The Slovenian launched a meeting record of 70.46m to win at the World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger meeting.

It was his ninth competition this season in which he has exceeded 70 metres and backed up his impressive win at Friday&rsquo;s (4) Diamond League Final in Brussels.
