The Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships concluded with unprecedented television viewership across Europe, capping a week of relentless audience growth on free-to-air public networks.
Despite heavy competition from the opening weekend of domestic football leagues across Europe, live athletics coverage consistently dominated primetime ratings, enabling rights-holders in major markets to win their respective market share battles outright.
Continental Primetime Highs
The final weekend produced outstanding figures across key broadcast territories:
• Germany (ARD / ZDF): Live coverage reached a championship high on Sunday evening, pulling in more than 5.4 million viewers with a peak exceeding 6.0 million. Broadcasts across ARD and ZDF topped four million viewers on each of the final four days, securing the number one market share daily and culminating in a 27.1% primetime share on Sunday.
• United Kingdom (BBC): The host broadcaster enjoyed a standout weekend with all coverage anchored on BBC One. Evening sessions attracted 3.0 million viewers on both Friday and Saturday before climbing past 3.5 million on Sunday. All three broadcasts achieved market shares exceeding 30%.
• France (France Télévisions): Sunday's closing session delivered the tournament's highest domestic audience, approaching 3.0 million viewers. Coverage across France 2 and France 3 built consistent momentum, with each of the final four evening sessions drawing over 2.0 million viewers.
• Italy (Rai): Broadcaster Rai 2 scheduled every evening session live, finishing on Sunday with a championship-high audience exceeding 2.4 million viewers and maintaining an overall tournament market share above 13%.
• Finland (YLE): Maintaining remarkable engagement, YLE achieved an average market share of over 74% across all broadcasts. Sunday morning’s marathon coverage drew 871,000 viewers, surging to a peak of 1.3 million to watch Alisa Vainio secure marathon gold.
• The Netherlands (NOS): Coverage grew steadily throughout the week on NPO 3, culminating in 861,000 viewers on Sunday evening and a peak of over 1.3 million as the Dutch women's 4x400m team captured relay gold. Digital streaming added up to 160,000 unique users during morning sessions.
• Poland (TVP): Momentum prompted parallel transmissions across TVP 1/2 and TVP Sport over the weekend, pushing viewing figures past the one-million mark on both Saturday and Sunday (1.1 million each day).
• Norway (NRK): Prime-time coverage on NRK1 maintained a commanding market share, consistently exceeding 60–65% across the championships, peaking above 500,000 viewers (a 10% national rating) during Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s 5000m gold medal run.
