Keely Hodgkinson, Audrey Werro and Femke Broeders-Bol each moved smoothly through the opening round of the women’s 800m at the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships on Tuesday (11), negotiating their heats in assured style.
For now, the three leading contenders remain on parallel paths. By Thursday evening’s semi-finals, those paths will begin to merge.
There was conviction, but no need to expend unnecessary energy.
Front running and records
First up was Hodgkinson, who was coolness personified in heat one. Decked out in wraparound shades, she went straight to the front and dictated proceedings from there, putting daylight between herself and the rest with 200 metres to go before cruising home in 1:57.28.
Behind her came Eloisa Coira, who broke a 46-year-old Italian record with 1:57.56.
In heat two, Broeders-Bol also took no risks, assuming an immediate lead. Running with her characteristically elegant stride, she stayed in front throughout to win in 1:59.96.
Next up was Werro, who followed the same script in heat three, leading from gun to tape. She was in cruise control throughout as she crossed the line in 1:57.83.
All three are safely — and impressively — through to Thursday’s semi-finals. The formalities are complete; from here, the intrigue begins to deepen.
