<h2>European Athletics Championships&nbsp;</h2>
As the jewel in the crown of events organised by European Athletics, the biennial European Athletics Championships are the showcase of the very best that the continental branch of the sport has to offer.
Hosts Italy had their best ever European Athletics Championships in Roma 2024, topping the medal table with eleven gold medals and 24 medals in total. This was the best ever European Athletics Championships by a host nation, surpassing the 20 medals won by Germany when Berlin staged the 2018 European Athletics Championships.
Among the many highlights from the host nation, Leonardo Fabbri and Gianmarco Tamberi broke the championship records in the shot put and high jump respectively while Nadia Battocletti sprinted to victory in both the 5000m and 10,000m. Lamont Marcell Jacobs retained his European 100m title and contributed to Italy's electric victory in the 4x100m while Yemaneberhan Crippa won half marathon gold and led Italy to the team title.
From an international standpoint, Croatia's Sandra Elkasevic won a historic seventh successive European discus title to become the first athlete in championship history to win seven gold medals. Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen also became the first male athlete, at 23, to win six gold medals at the European Athletics Championships courtesy of his third 1500/5000m double.&nbsp;

With just one month to go until Birmingham hosts the European Athletics Championships (August 10-16 at Alexander Stadium) organisers are encouraging fans and spectators to mark their calendars, get tickets, and check out all the ways they can be involved in the UK&rsquo;s first staging of the European Athletics Championships &ndash; a landmark moment for the West Midlands and for athletics.
This week organisers announced a major ticket release, maximising every available seat for fans in all sessions from 10&ndash;16 August &ndash; including previously sold-out sessions featuring some of the Championships&rsquo; most in-demand events.
With a family of four able to attend the event from just &pound;33, the championships will be one of the most family-friendly major sports event to come to the UK.

Fans from across Europe and beyond will head to the iconic Alexander Stadium from Monday to Sunday, with medal events taking placeevery day, including the women&rsquo;s 100m final on Monday 10 August.&nbsp;
Pole vault world record holder Armand &lsquo;Mondo&rsquo; Duplantis has become the second athlete ever to have a dedicated children&rsquo;s ticket named after him at a top-tier athletics event in the UK.
To inspire more young people to experience the Championships, the &lsquo;Mondo Ticket&rsquo; priced at just &pound;6.31, matching the height of his current world record jump, was released for session nine (Friday 14 August), when the Swedish superstar competes in his qualifying round, on 27 May.&nbsp;
Groups of nine+ are also being given exclusive groups offer to sessions 1, 3, 5 and 7 &ndash; the morning sessions of Monday-Thursday, enabling them to unlock the cheapest way to watch the athletics live.
Child-focussed groups are able to access &pound;5 youth (under 16s) tickets and for every nine purchased, two free adult chaperones are added. Meanwhile, adult, student and mixed-age groups unlock the special price of &pound;5 per ticket when adding nine or more spectators to their order, a price previously only available for juniors.&nbsp;

For those looking to celebrate a local hero, the temporary North Upper stand, the final bend before the 400m Finish Line, has also been unveiled as the Matthew Hudson-Smith stand for the Championships, playing homage to the Wolverhampton-born Birchfield Harrier.
Organisers hope to fill the stand with local young people, inspired by one of their own as he competes for the 400m continental title, inspiring the next generation.&nbsp;
This week Birmingham 2026's official Ticket Resale platform also opened, giving fans who can no longer attend the Championships a safe and secure way to sell their tickets to other fans on <a href="https://tickets.birmingham26.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tickets.birmingham26.com</a>.
The Championships offer the chance to see some of Europe&rsquo;s biggest stars in action, including&nbsp;Mondo Duplantis, Nadia Battocletti, Josh Kerr, Femke Bol, Mattia Furlani, Isaac Nader, Keely Hodgkinson, Georgia Hunter Bell, and more.
Not only that, the Marathon and Festival of Race Walks mean that the public can catch the excitement in the city centre with the elite road races taking place on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 August. &nbsp;
Cherry Alexander, Championship Director for Birmingham 2026, said: &ldquo;With just one month to go, fans can make their plans to be a part of the UK's first ever staging of a European Athletics Championships, whether buying tickets to see the best in Europe competing in Birmingham, picking a spot to view the elite race walks and marathon events in the city centre, or by signing up to run the mass participation Unity Challenge for their own medal moment.&rdquo;
The <a href="https://www.birmingham26.com/home/competitions/european-athletics-championships/unity5k" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unity Challenge </a>mass-participation 5k and 1k event will also give the public a chance to pick up their own medal moment during the Championships, sharing the same roads as the elite marathon runners earlier that morning.

One month to go! Countdown on to Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships

Very few athletes can match Irena Szewinska for longevity or versatility. And no athlete in European Athletics Championships history can match her medal haul of 10 medals which she achieved across four editions in six different events.
In the countdown to Birmingham 2026 (10&ndash;16 August), we look back at 26 unforgettable moments from European Athletics Championships history, including Szewinska's brilliant sprint double in Rome 1974.

<h3 dir="ltr">The background</h3>
There had been a profound change in the hierarchy of women&rsquo;s sprinting in the early 1970s.
Poland&rsquo;s Irena Szewinska had won three gold medals at the 1966 European Athletics Championships and 200m gold at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City before East Germany&rsquo;s Renate Stecher would take the sprinting scene by storm in the early 1970s.

Admittedly, Szewinska took time away from the track after 1968 to start a family but Stecher thoroughly defeated the Pole on her return at both the 1971 European Athletics Championships in Helsinki as well as at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, part of a series of 90 successive race wins in the sprints spanning from 1970 to 1974.
But at the 1974 European Athletics Championships in Rome, Szewinska proved she was far from a spent force. She soared to the sprint double in the Stadio Olimpico on her way to becoming the most bemedalled athlete in European Athletics Championships history.&nbsp;
<h3 dir="ltr">What happened?</h3>
The 100m final played out as expected. Drawn in lane one, Stecher led Szewinska out of the blocks with her powerful, bullet-like start and the East German was still leading the final after 70 metres.&nbsp;
But with a performance that thoroughly rolled back the years, Szewinska flowed past the reigning champion in the last 15 metres to win in a championship record of 11.13 - her first European title in eight years - ahead of Stecher in 11.23.
"This has to be rated among the great sprints of all-time," enthused Athletics Weekly. Szewinska broke the championship record despite the moderate handicap of a 1.2 m/s&nbsp; headwind. And despite the less than favourite wind, Szewinska's winning time was only a fraction slower than Stecher&rsquo;s 11.07 clocking at the 1972 Olympics, the fastest ever fully automatic time at that juncture in history.
Szewinska and Stecher would also cross paths in the 200m and in front of a crowd of more than 50,000 - many of whom had come to watch home favourite Pietro Mennea win the men's 200m title on the same evening - the Pole prevailed again in a thrilling race.
The final played out similarly to the 100m with Stecher leading Szewinska off the bend before the long-striding Pole glided past the East German to complete the sprint double. Her time of 22.51 ahead of Stecher&rsquo;s 22.68 was another championship record despite an even stronger headwind of 2.8 m/s.
Szewinska added to her medal tally with bronze for Poland in the 4x100m but her best performance of the championships came arguably in the one event in which she didn&rsquo;t win a medal.&nbsp;
Szewinska showed her remarkable versatility by clocking a sensational 48.5 anchor leg in the 4x400m final to pull the Poles up to fourth in 3:26.4, a performance which was almost three seconds faster than the previous championship record but still insufficient to be rewarded with a medal, such were the competitive advancements in women&rsquo;s athletics in the 1970s.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Despite becoming the first woman in history to break the 50 second-barrier for 400m earlier in 1974, Szewinska was still a relative novice at the event at this stage of her career but the event would become her primary focus in the last chapter of her gloried career.&nbsp;&nbsp;
<h3 dir="ltr">The aftermath</h3>
After a relatively low-key 1975, Szewinska focused with renewed vigour on the one lap event in 1976 and the Pole has the notable distinction of becoming the last woman before Marita Koch to hold the world record in the discipline.
Szewinska broke the world record with a 49.75 clocking on her home track in Bydgoszcz ahead of the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal where she won her third Olympic gold medal, shattering her world record with a 49.29 clocking to win the title by over one second.
At the 1978 European Athletics Championships in Prague, Szewinska would have to give way to Koch who would dominate the event until her retirement in 1986 but the Pole still won bronze medals in both the 400m and 4x400m, taking her tally up to a record-breaking 10 medals in European Athletics Championships history.
Almost 50 years later, no athlete has surpassed Szewinska&rsquo;s medal haul at the European Athletics Championships and her Polish 400m record of 49.29 stood as a national record for 48 years, fittingly until the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome where Natalia Bukowiecka - who was still competing under the maiden name of Kaczmarek - won the title ahead of Ireland&rsquo;s Rhasidat Adeleke in a classic final.&nbsp;
"Coming to the start I was dreaming about the Polish record but this 48.98 was something more than my imagination," said Bukowiecka who, like so many Polish athletes, has cited the trailblazing Szewinska, who died in 2018, as having a profound influence on her career.

Away from the track, Szewinska was also a trailblazer in the corridors of power. She was one of the first women to be elected onto the European Athletics Council in 1998 as well as one of the first women to serve on the World Athletics Council in 2005.
Szewinska also served as President of the Polish Athletic Association (PZLA) and Vice President of the Polish Olympic Committee.

As Europe&rsquo;s best athletes prepare to compete for medals in Birmingham, they will also have the opportunity to shape the future of the sport by electing the European Athletics Athletes&rsquo; Committee for the 2026&ndash;2030 term.&nbsp;
The Committee provides a vital platform for athletes to influence decision-making across European Athletics, ensuring that the views and experiences of competitors are represented at every level of the organisation.
Made up of eight elected members &ndash; four women and four men &ndash; the Athletes&rsquo; Committee serves as the collective voice of Europe&rsquo;s elite athletes.&nbsp;
Working closely with the European Athletics Council, the Committee discusses issues affecting competitors on and off the track, from competition matters and athlete welfare to integrity, safeguarding and the long-term development of the sport.&nbsp;
The Committee Chair also sits on the European Athletics Council with full voting rights, ensuring that athletes have a direct seat at the table.
<h3>Birmingham Election</h3>
Voting will take place during the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships, with all accredited athletes eligible to cast their vote for four female and four male candidates during the accreditation process, from 5-15 August.
The results of the election will be announced on Sunday 16 August.
The eight successful candidates will serve a four-year mandate, representing athletes from across Europe and helping to guide the future direction of athletics on the continent.
Standing for election requires more than sporting success alone. Candidates must have competed at a European Athletics Championships within the last six years and demonstrate their commitment to the values of the sport through anti-doping, safeguarding and ethical compliance education.&nbsp;
Nominated by their Member Federations, they bring a wealth of experience from across disciplines and nations, united by a shared ambition to make a positive difference for their fellow athletes.

The Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships in Berlin will be long remembered for being the starting point in the careers of two of the defining athletes of the century.
At 18, Armand Duplantis vaulted over 6.05m to begin his reign in the pole vault. But not to be undone, a 17-year-old Jakob Ingebrigtsen swept the 1500m and 5000m titles, a double that had never been achieved in the history of the championships. &nbsp;
In the countdown to Birmingham 2026 (10&ndash;16 August), we look back at 26 unforgettable moments from European Athletics Championships history, including Ingebrigtsen&rsquo;s incredible double in Berlin .
<h3>The background</h3>
At 17, Jakob Ingebrigtsen already had a disproportionately high profile in Norway. He was featured heavily on the fly-on-the-wall television series Team Ingebrigtsen which was shown on primetime Norwegian television, documenting the on-track and off-track exploits of his family, including his older brothers Henrik and Filip.
Henrik and Filip had won the 2012 and 2016 European 1500m finals and another chapter of Ingebrigtsen dominance was widely anticipated at the 2018 European Athletics Championships in Berlin where Jakob had qualified for the team alongside his older brothers.

&ldquo;Even when I won in 2012, everyone was saying it was about Jakob at that point,&rdquo; recalled Henrik, reflecting on the family&rsquo;s ascendancy in the 2010s.
However, it was still Filip who was the prohibitive favourite having recently lowered the Norwegian record to 3:30.01. Anyone who had followed Jakob&rsquo;s progress could not have been unaware of his prodigious potential but at the age of 17, surely he would only play a supporting role on his European Athletics Championships debut in Berlin?
<h3>What happened?</h3>
All three Ingebrigtsens made it through to the 1500m final and there was speculation the brothers could even achieve the unprecedented feat of a sweep of the podium.
A clean sweep didn&rsquo;t quite happen as Henrik and Filip - the latter suffering with a rib injury sustained in an awkward fall in the heats - were run out of proceedings in the last 200 metres as their precocious brother became the youngest ever male gold medallist in European Athletics Championships.

The Ingebrigtsens moved through the field with military precision on the second lap with Jakob taking up the lead ahead of his brothers with just under 800 metres remaining. Was Jakob acting as a domestique for his older brothers or was this Jakob running at his own volition?
In what would become his tactical hallmark, Jakob wound the pace up unrelentingly in the last two laps, only faltering in the last 40 metres when the fast-finishing pair of Poland&rsquo;s Marcin Lewandowski and Great Britain&rsquo;s Jake Wightman began to bear down on the teenager.
Jakob glanced around anxiously on floundering legs as his lead began to diminish, willing on the finish-line.
Fortunately, the finish-line arrived just in time for the 17-year-old Jakob who held on for a seismic victory, winning by just 0.04 over Lewandowski. &ldquo;I was wondering if I missed a lap or something,&rdquo; said the bemused champion in the immediate aftermath.

He added: &ldquo;I had some tactics to go to the front with two laps to go. Obviously I was expecting someone to be strong on the last lap and come up from behind but I felt very good coming into the last 100 metres.&rdquo;
And the same tactics worked perfectly in the 5000m final the following evening. Showing the race craft and poise of a seasoned veteran, Jakob splintered the field with yet another long run for home, coming down the home straight with Henrik - whom he shared a mid-race high-five with - in distant pursuit to win his second title of the championships, and with relative ease.

&ldquo;This was one of my dreams to take gold at the Europeans. Doing this at 17 motivates me to keep on working hard in the next couple of years and becoming a much better runner,&rdquo; commented Ingebrigtsen.
<h3>The aftermath&nbsp;</h3>
Jakob would indeed become &ldquo;a much better runner&rdquo; in the years to run although that assessment would be to do a huge disservice to his accomplishments.
Just three years after winning double gold in Berlin, Ingebrigtsen was crowned Olympic 1500m champion at the age of 20, setting a since-improved European and Olympic record of 3:28.32 to become the second youngest winner in Olympic history.&nbsp;

But Ingebrigtsen&rsquo;s career hasn&rsquo;t been without its downs both on and away from the track.&nbsp;
The Norwegian suffered chastening defeats in the 1500m at the World Athletics Championships in both 2022 and 2023 and was run out of the medals altogether at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris where he served as a de facto pacemaker before fading to fourth in one of the greatest 1500m races in championship history..
But on each occasion Ingebrigtsen bounced back to win the 5000m in three successive global championships, including in Paris where he sauntered away in the last 600 metres, winning his second Olympic title by more than one second in what is widely considered to be his secondary event.
And at the European Athletics Championships, Ingebrigtsen has continued to make history. He defended his 1500/5000m titles in 2022 and 2024, becoming the first man in European Athletics Championships history to win six gold medals with his victory in the 1500m in Rome at the age of just 23.

But Ingebrigtsen finds himself in a race against time to get fit for the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. The 25-year-old underwent surgery on his Achilles tendon in February, the same injury which blighted his outdoor season in 2025, with no return date set at the time of writing.
&ldquo;The last couple of months have been quite difficult with some good days and some bad days and ultimately leading to this decision, which was 100% necessary for me to be healthy again,&rdquo; said Ingebrigtsen on the decision to face the doctor&rsquo;s knife.
Can Ingebrigtsen get back into form in time to add to his record gold medal haul or will a new champion be crowned in the 1500m and 5000m in August?

Ingebrigtsen’s breakthrough in Berlin | 26 Magical Moments 

The number in my mind right now is 85 metres.
That is the level my coach Kathrin Klaas and I believe I can reach within the next two years. It is an ambitious target, but everything we are doing at the moment is aimed at getting there.
We are not looking for quick fixes or one big throw. We are trying to build a technique that can deliver consistently at the highest level for years to come.
That process takes time.
<h3>A learning experience</h3>
This season has been a real learning experience because we are still working through technical changes. There have been encouraging moments, but also some frustrating ones. The most important thing is that the technique is becoming more stable and I can feel the progress in training.
The start of my season showed exactly why patience is needed. My first competition in Halle on 16 May was disappointing. I threw 77.64m and, to be honest, almost everything went the opposite way to how I wanted it to. I arrived wanting to show what I was capable of and instead had one of those days where nothing seemed to come together.

A week later, things looked very different. In Fr&auml;nkisch-Crumbach, I threw 81.27m and immediately felt much more relaxed and comfortable in the circle. That performance showed me what is possible when the technique starts to come together naturally.
The biggest challenge with changing technique is not only the physical side but also the mental side. For months I had to think about every detail, every movement and every position in the circle. Sometimes my body felt good, but my mind was exhausted from constantly processing technical information.
Now it is starting to become more natural. I still need to be aware of where my body is in the circle, but more and more of the movement is becoming automatic. That is one of the reasons why the throws are becoming more consistent.
Consistency is really the key for me. One day I could throw over 80 metres and another day be far below that level. The goal is to remove those big variations and make the technique reliable enough to perform well every time I step into the circle.
<h3>Letting off steam in Norway</h3>
There have been mixed feelings during the early part of the season. After Fr&auml;nkisch-Crumbach I competed again in Bergen.

The result was close to 80 metres, but I was tired from travelling and from competing three times within a short period. I didn't feel as relaxed as I had in Germany and I struggled to find the same rhythm.
Still, Bergen was a great experience away from the competition itself. I had the chance to enjoy the city and visit one of the famous harbour saunas.

Jumping into the cold sea after sitting in the sauna was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. Bergen is a beautiful city and it was nice to switch off from athletics for a while.
<h3>Birmingham and beyond</h3>
Now my focus is back on training and continuing to build towards the bigger goals.
The European Athletics Championships will be incredibly competitive. Athletes such as Mykhaylo Kokhan and Yann Chaussinand have already thrown beyond 82 metres this year, and there are several others capable of producing huge performances on any given day.

But I try not to spend too much time thinking about what everyone else is doing.
My focus is on the process. If I can continue to stabilise the technique and keep making progress with Kathrin, I believe 85 metres is possible within the next two years. That remains the target that motivates me every day in training.
Everything we are doing now is about building towards that mark.

Continuing its ongoing investment in volunteers across the sport, England Athletics has provided three Birmingham clubs with bursaries for coaching courses ahead of this summer&rsquo;s European Athletics Championships (Alexander Stadium, Birmingham, 10-16 August).
Birchfield Harriers, Birmingham Running and Triathlon Club (BRAT) and Royal Sutton Coldfield AC will benefit from a total of 19 bursaries <span style="font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; color: black; mso-font-kerning: 0pt; mso-ligatures: none; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;">&ndash; with a collective value in excess of &pound;5000&nbsp;<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; color: black; mso-font-kerning: 0pt; mso-ligatures: none; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;">&ndash; with the aim of getting more of their volunteers qualified as Coaching Assistants and Athletics Coaches.
Cath Muth, Birchfield Harriers, said: "The support we have received through the bursaries has meant we have been able to assist two of our coaches in gaining their Coach qualification. These coaches will be able to lead our academy sessions, helping athletes new to the sport develop their skills and ultimately move into coaching groups in the club.
"In addition to the support for two Coach qualifications, we have been able to qualify three people as Coaching Assistants. Adding three new Coaching Assistants, working under the supervision of our current coaches, means we will be able to expand our capacity at a time when we are attracting an increasing number of children and adults into the sport. Our new Coaches will also enable us to increase the numbers in our Academies which will help us increase our overall capacity. The bursaries have been a vital part in enabling to develop coaches and attract new people into coaching"

Awarding these coaching bursaries to clubs in Birmingham is about developing skilled, confident coaches who can support athletes at every level.

Through Birmingham 2026&rsquo;s impact plan &lsquo;Beyond&rsquo;, a programme created to inspire positive, lasting change across the region linked to the European Athletics Championships, organisers are creating new opportunities for communities and amplifying existing initiatives that are already making a difference in the West Midlands.
Chris Moss, the Birmingham 2026 Impact Lead, said: &ldquo;Two of the key pillars of the Beyond framework are to provide community benefit through athletics and running, and to improve accessibility and inclusion for all. Through the provision of coaching bursaries and the opportunity to get more volunteers qualified, England Athletics is helping clubs with the demand that will come from people being inspired by the Championships on a local level. That is having a positive impact now but it will also make delivery sustainable in the long-term.&rdquo;

10,000 metres

The 100 metres is the shortest outdoor sprint and sets the benchmark for pure speed in athletics. Athletes accelerate from blocks and reach top velocity within seconds, maintaining form through a high-intensity dash down the straight. Reaction time is often decisive at this distance, with races won and lost by hundredths of a second. The event has a long tradition of showcasing the fastest men and women in Europe, and it remains one of the most watched races at any championship.

100 metres

The 5000 metres is a long-distance track race demanding aerobic endurance, tactical awareness and mental focus. Athletes complete twelve and a half laps, managing pace while responding to changes initiated by rivals. Success often depends on staying relaxed early before increasing pace in the closing stages. The event has evolved over time from slow, tactical races to consistently fast, aggressive championship battles.

5000 metres
