Reigning European outdoor and indoor champion Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands and Germany’s Olympic champion Yemisi Ogunleye lived up to the expectations to dominate the women’s shot put.

The Madrid 2025 European Athletics Team Championships 1st Division is being streamed live on the European Athletics website courtesy of the Eurovision Sport Platform.

As was the case at the Apeldoorn 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships, the Dutch got the better of the German thanks to a 20.14m release to beat the championships’ record.

Schilder leaves it late

Sweden’s Fanny Roos led after the first round thanks to a 19.08m toss while the hot favourites Ogunleye and Schilder opened with respective heaves of 18.77m and 18.63m with Portugal’s Jessica Inchude sandwiched between them thanks to a 18.74m effort.

None of the favourites improved their respective performances in the second or third rounds, the number of participants being reduced to eight after halfway.

The 26-year-old Schilder improved in her fourth attempt to 19.02m to threaten Roos’ top spot while Inchude and Ogunleye bettered slightly their respective performances to 18.84m and 18.80m.

The fifth round proved to be key as the Dutch athlete managed her winning 20.14m release while Ogunleye improved to 19.58m some nine centimetres shy of her season’s best; as for Roos, the 30-year-old Sweden also bettered her opening effort thanks to a 19.08 toss to secure the third place as none of leading contenders managed to throw further in round six.
