Double European U20 champion Håkon Moe Berg ran a massive 1500m lifetime best at the Pfungstadt Evening Sports Festival in Germany on Wednesday (20) evening.
Fresh from winning the 1500m and 3000m titles at the European Athletics U20 Championships, the 19-year-old finished a very narrow second in the 1500m to his compatriot and world bronze medallist Narve Gilje Nordås - 3:30.26 to 3:30.28.
And while Nordas took the plaudits last night, Moe Berg continues to embellish his credentials as one of the rising stars of global middle distance running. He slashed five seconds from his previous lifetime best of 3:35.41 with 3:30.28, a time which has only been beaten by Niels Laros (3:29.54) and Jakob Ingebrigtsen (3:30.16) among European U20s.
Moe Berg’s time was also comfortably under the qualifying standard of 3:33.00 for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Another recently crowned European U20 champion also impressed in the women’s 800m. Jana Marie Becker broke the 2:00-barrier for the first time, finishing sixth in 1:59.59 in a race won by former world indoor champion Ajee’ Wilson from the United States in 1:57.98.
