Normal service was resumed as Armand Duplantis went over six metres at the Shanghai Diamond League on Saturday (3). The Swede won the opening Diamond League of the year last weekend (26) in Xiamen, where winds restricted him to a best of 5.92m.
But Mondo was back in familiar territory on the second leg of the China trip, clearing a meeting record of 6.11m at the first attempt. With victory assured, the bar was set to a world record 6.28m and he took three unsuccessful attempts. Surely it is a matter of when, not if, for the peerless Swede.
Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis and Meeno Vloon of the Netherlands, who shared gold at the Apeldoorn 2025 European Indoor Championships filled second and third places with clearances of 6.01m and 5.82m respectively.
World lead for Warholm
In his first 400m hurdles of the year, Karsten Warholm maintained his excellent start to the season winning in a world leading 47.28. It confirms the Norwegian is in superb shape following his season-opening 300m hurdles world best of 33.05 at the Xiamen Diamond League a week earlier.
World record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh won the women’s high jump with a first time clearance of 2.00m, making it a Diamond League double in China for the Ukrainian. Another athlete repeating her winning form from Xiamen was Greece’s Elina Tzenkgo.
The 2002 European champion won the women’s javelin with 64.90m. Portugal’s Pedro Pichardo won the men’s triple jump. The Tokyo Olympic champion won with 17.03m (+0.3m/s) on his season opener.
