  • After Istanbul bronze, Britain's Osagie aims for more success in Helsinki

Andrew Osagie of Great Britain.
Andrew Osagie was one of many British athletes who rose to the occasion at last weekend's World Indoor Championships in Istanbul when he took the 800m bronze medal.

His place on the podium was one of nine achieved by the inspired Great Britain and Northern Ireland squad, that finished as Europe's leading nation and second on the medal table only to the United States.

Even more impressive was the fact the 24-year-old from Harlow had sustained a knee injury while training in Kenya at the end of last year that had limited him to just two previous races prior to his trip to Türkiye.

However, he showed no sign of that previous problem as he produced a phenomenal finish to go past Poland's 2012 world leader and 2011 European Athletics Indoor Championships gold medallist Adam Kszczot in the final few metres to snatch an unexpected medal, finishing behind the Ethiopian winner Mohammed Aman and Czech Republic's silver medallist Jakub Holusa.

Osagie has already said that he wants to run at the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki this summer and that could bring him face-to-face with Holusa again, as the Czech is another of Europe's top athletes who will bid for continental honours after their success on a global stage last weekend.

In an interview with the British broadcaster BBC, this can be read here, Osagie talks about his summer ambitions.

The 2012 European Athletics Championships in Helsinki, Finland, will be from 27 June to 1 July.
