  • Asher-Smith dashes to 60m victory in New York

2024 European 100m champion Dina Asher-Smith produced back-to-back victories on US soil in the 60m at the Millrose Games in New York, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting, on Sunday (1).

One weekend after winning in Boston in 7.08, the Brit came through strongly in the last 20 metres to pip last year’s winner Jacious Sears from the United States on her inside, 7.10 to 7.12.

Asher-Smith is building towards the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Kujawy-Pomorze which will be her first appearance at the championships in a decade.

Josh Kerr made a promising comeback from a calf injury which ruined his 1500m title defence at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, causing him to hobble home in last place.

Kerr struck for home on the penultimate lap of the rarely-contested two miles but was overhauled on the last lap by Olympic 1500m champion Cole Hocker who recovered from a stumble to win in 8:07.31 to Kerr’s 8:07.68.

Kerr has confirmed in recent weeks that he is targeting the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships on the road to a busy summer season culminating with the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham from 10-16 August.

Fellow Brit Hannah Nuttall produced a big lifetime best to finish second in the 3000m in 8:32.94 behind Kenya’s Doris Lemngole in 8:31.39.

Attaoui finishes second in the 800m while national mile records fall

2024 European silver medalist Mohamed Attaoui had to settle for the runner-up spot in his first 800m of 2026.

Attaoui kicked into the lead at the bell in 1:18.04 but the Spaniard was run down off the last bend by Colin Sahlman from the United States for victory in 1:44.70 to Attaoui’s 1:44.98.

Attaoui’s time was still an indoor lifetime best and sets himself up well for a prospective attempt on the world indoor 1000m record of 2:14.20 on home soil in Madrid on Friday.

In the women’s mile which was won by Nikki Hiltz in a world lead of 4:19.64, Poland’s Klaudia Kazimierska finished third in 4:21.36 to break Lidia Chojecka’s long-standing national indoor record while Wilma Nielsen also set a Swedish indoor record of 4:23.56 to finish eighth.

In her first competition since giving birth to her first child, Greece’s Ekaterini Stefanidi cleared 4.10m in the pole vault as she also builds towards the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

Stefanidi has won medals in the pole vault at the last five editions of the European Athletics Championships including gold medals in 2016 and 2018 in Amsterdam and Berlin respectively.
