European Athletics has launched the European Athletics Coaching Awards to celebrate the important contributions made by coaches to the sport of athletics.
The awards are the centrepiece of European Athletics’ strategy to promote the development of coaching.
All 50 European Athletics Member Federations have been asked to select one male and one female winner for 2011 based on the criteria ‘excellence in coaching’. The awards will be confirmed by a European Athletics appointed jury, which will include a representative of the European Athletics Coaches Association.
In addition, coaches whose athletes have won a senior European Athletics Championship will automatically receive the award, starting with the coaches of the gold medallists at last year’s European Athletics Championships in Barcelona.
The first award presentations will be made to two representative (one male and one female) of the all the national winners during the European Athletics Awards Night, presented by Mondo, in Arona, Spain, on 15 October. The two representatives will be selected by the jury.
The remainder of the awards will be presented by the Member Federations at national ceremonies.
“I am delighted that this award has been created”, says European Athletics Director General Christian Milz. “It is hard to overstate the importance of coaches to our sport at the elite and grass roots levels and it is the role of European Athletics to recognise excellence in this field.”
