The Johan Cruyff Foundation has become the Social Partner of the Amsterdam 2016 European Athletics Championships. The common goal for both organisations is to allow children to be active, in the run up to and during the Championships.

Held from 6-10 July, the European Athletics Championships is the biggest sporting event to be organised in 2016 in the Netherlands, the first time the country will organise this major event.

The partnership between Amsterdam 2016 and the Cruff Foundation was signed during the Dutch National Indoor Championships on Sunday 28 February in Apeldoorn.

One of the main objectives of the Cruyff Foundation is to enable children to engage as much as possible with sporting activities. The foundation makes this possible by developing projects aimed at engaging youth with sports and games. By coming together in a dynamic environment children get fitter, their cognitive capabilities improve and they have a higher chance of remaining active throughout the rest of their lives.

“It’s one of our aims, to initiate children to the sport of athletics, by letting them experience the different disciplines in Amsterdam. We will achieve that goal by cooperating with the Host City and the Dutch Athletics Federation. The fact that we will join forces with the Cruyff Foundation from now on, strengthens us in realising our ambitions”, states Rien van Haperen, CEO of Amsterdam 2016.
