Lithuanian discus legend Virgilijus Alekna.

Lithuanian discus legend Virgilijus Alekna, now 39, provided the top performance of the Vardinoyannia meeting in Rethymno, Greece, when he threw 67.88m at the European Athletics Outdoor Premium Meeting on Wednesday.

It moved the evergreen two-time Olympic gold medallist into third spot in the global rankings, in which European discus throwers occupying the top 10 places.

In second place was Estonia’s Mart Israel with 66.40m, just short of his best of 66.98m which he threw in April.

Greek long jump record holder Luis Tsatoumas flew out to a 2011 best of 8.26m to move up to fourth on this season’s all-time rankings and he also had jumps of 8.22m and 8.20m in an excellent series.

Ukrainian hammer thrower Oleksandr Sokyrskyy took his specialist event with a heave of 75.52m.

In men’s 100m, Lithuania’s Rytis Sakalauskas triumphed with a wind-assisted 10.10 while Slovakia’s Dana Veldáková impressed in the triple jump with 14.33m and also had two other jumps over 14.30m.

Two home wins over barriers were notched up by Irini Kokinariou, who won the women’s 3000m steeplechase in 9:40.20, while Kostas Douvalidis took the men’s 110m hurdles in 13.53m

The Vardinoyannia meeting was the fifth of eight European Athletics Outdoor Premium Meetings.
