Two Italian victories in the triple jump contests from Fabrizio Donato and Simona La Mantia delighted the home crown who braved the rain at the 12th Memorial Primo Nebiolo meeting in Torino on Friday.
The 2011 European Athletics Indoor Championships silver medallist Donato was the only jumper able to go beyond 17 metres in the men’s event at European Athletics Outdoor Permit Meeting when he reached a season’s best of 17.01m in the fifth round.
“It was tough to jump in these conditions but I had a good feeling. Jumping 17.01 and taking off 30 centimetres from the board was a good result,” said Donato.
Fellow Italian Fabrizio Schembri was second with 16.88m just beating Russia’s world junior champion Aleksey Fedorov, who third with 16.82m.
Portugal’s 2008 Olympic Games champion Nelson ‰vora, in his first outdoor competition of the year after struggling with injuries since 2009, finished fifth with 16.42m.
La Mantia, this year’s European Athletics Indoor Championships gold medallist, went out to 14.39m in the women’s contest and dominated the event as she was the only women to go beyond 14 metres.
“I felt better today than in Florence during last weekend’s Coppa Italia where I jumped 14.25m. Nothing has changed since my win in Paris. I have continued training hard to prepare for Daegu. I want to be in the top five in the world before Daegu,” said La Mantia, who confirmed she will be in the Italian team at the SPAR European Team Championships in Stockholm next weekend.
The men’s hammer saw Russia’s Aleksey Zagorniy emphasis his status as the number one thrower in the world so far this year. He extended his 2011 unbeaten streak to eight meetings, and be has thrown over 81 metres in three of them, by throwing 81.49m.
He opened the competition with 77.33m in the first round, which he increased to 79.92m in the third, before producing his best effort in the fourth round.
His main rival, Italy’s 2010 European Athletics Championships silver medallist Nicola Vizzoni, who threw 80.29m in the Coppa Italia in Florence last Sunday, had a solid start with 76.68m and later improved to 77.83m for second place.
Russia’s Aleksey Dmitrik, who cleared a world-leading 2.35m in the Spanish city of Huelva last week, won the high jump with 2.25m. He beat his compatriot and 2009 European Athletics Junior Championships winner Sergey Mudrov, who cleared the same height, by virtue of having fewer failures during the competition.
In the women’s javelin, Great Britain’s Goldie Sayers sent her implement out to 60.30m with her first attempt and it sufficed for victory.
Germany’s 2010 European Athletics Championships gold medallist Linda Stahl continues to struggle to find her form but at least went over 60 metres for the first time this season when she threw 60.14m in the second round to finish as the runner up behind Sayers.
There was a pair of Ukrainian victories in the sprints with Yelizaveta Bryzhina taking the 100m in 11.79 while Antonina Yefremova won the 400m in 51.43.
There were also two impressive wins from international competitors, Morocco’s Amine Laalou setting a new 1500m meeting record 3:31.92 while Cuba’s 110m hurdles world record holder Dayron Robles won his specialist event in 13.23.
The Torino meeting was the second of nine European Athletics Outdoor Premium Meetings in 2011.
