The 2024 world indoor champion, Simon Ehammer, completed his first heptathlon of the season on 8 February at the Swiss national championships where he dominated to take the win with a world leading 6416 points.
Ehammer had already competed in six of the seven heptathlon events this season, and surpassed his season’s best in all but on of those, with 1.98m in the high jump just 2cm short of his seasons best.
In the long jump, his strongest event, Ehammer jumped 8.05m, surpassing the eight metre mark for the first time this year, while also measuring 5.10m in pole vault, 7.63 in 60m hurdles, 6.77 over 60m, 14.57m in shot put and 2:45.75 in the 1000m.
With the reigning world and European indoor champion, Sander Skotheim, out of the indoor season due to injury, Ehammer will be set on regaining his world title.
The Swiss will also have his sights on the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships, but he will have to make a choice whether to compete in the decathlon or long jump.
At the Munich 2022 European Athletics Championships he placed second in the decathlon with 8468 points. However at Rome 2024 European Athletics Championships he competed in the long jump instead and placed third with 8.31m, before narrowly missing out on the podium at the 2024 Olympics where he placed fourth with 8.20m.
While the pentathlon atthe Swiss indoor championships was won by 21-year-old Liana Trumpi with 4297 points and a personal best of 2:19.61 in the short track 800m.
She also clocked 8.71 in the 60m hurdles, measured 13.34m in the shot put, 1.75m in high jump and 5.94m in long jump.
This was Trumpi’s first indoor national title after winning the outdoor heptathlon title last year and placing fifth at the Bergen 2025 European Athletics U23 Championships.
