European Athletics today launched a new 'green' logo to reflect its commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability.
The launch coincides with 'Earth Day 2010', which is celebrated in more than 175 countries around the world to raise awareness and appreciation for the earth's environment.
The classic European Athletics logo with the signature slogan 'Your Sport for Life' in the colour green has been designed to create a consistent brand identity for sustainability initiatives developed by the continental governing body.
'This logo underlines our green values and highlights the sustainability initiative we introduced last year,' said European Athletics Director General Christian Milz.
'Through our commitment and leadership in this and other areas such as health, fitness, education and personal development, our sport can add to the quality of life for millions across Europe'.
In 2009 European Athletics launched its Sustainable Sports and Event Toolkit (SSET) - an online 'how to' guide for environmentally conscious organisers co-developed with the International Academy of Sports Science and Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland, the International Olympic Committee and the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Organising Committee.
Fourteen athletics events across Europe have begun using the tool, including the 2010 European Athletics Championships in Barcelona, the 2011 European Athletics Indoor Championships in Paris, the Seven Hills Run in Nijmegen, Netherlands and Athletissima, the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Lausanne.
'It's been gratifying to see how many events have already expressed an interest in the SSET, which we are making available to our partners free of charge,' said Milz.
'I believe that in the coming years the SSET will help to make athletics events across Europe more sustainable thereby adding to the already strong positive image our sport enjoys with the public'.
The logo is visible today on the European Athletics homepage (www.european-athletics.org)
