European Athletics recently joined other sports organisation in Lisbon, Portugal for a final meeting of the Green Sports Hub Europe (GSHE) project, which aims to drive the sports industry toward a greener and more responsible future.
The event gave GSHE partners the opportunity to come together and review their shared mission, as the end of the project funding cycle approaches. This meeting – an inspiring ‘learn and do’ workshop – was a key step in solidifying the project’s legacy.
As part of the ENGSO European Sport Platform event, the GSHE partners orchestrated an engaging and inspiring workshop on environmental advocacy in sport. It gave all in attendance the chance to do some collective thinking and foster a vision towards a greener future.
GSHE is a three-year EU-funded project to create an EU-level hub – as a seed for a future alliance – to improve sport’s environmental performance. In the final year of the project, a self-assessment tool and good practices library have been delivered.
The project’s partners, including European Athletics, have also encouraged event hosts to organise their events in a more sustainable way and to help them in the best way we can.

Sustainability Self-Assessment Tool
As part of the project, GSHE launched the Sustainability Self-Assessment Tool earlier this year. More than 50 organisations have used the self-assessment tool to help improve their understanding of their organisation’s environmental impact.
The Sustainability Self-Assessment tool helps organisations to better understand their own impact on the environment, and how this can be mitigated, focussing on six modules:
- event management
- natural environment
- governance
- resource management
- facilities
- and host/venue selection.
