European Athletics offers its condolences and expresses its deepest sympathies to the victims of the tragic attacks on Friday in the Norwegian capital city of Oslo and on the island of Utøya.

“The whole European Athletics family is shocked by the tragedy that happened in Norway yesterday. We present our sympathies to the family and friends of the victims of the attacks, and strongly hope that the movement of athletics is not touched directly by this tragic incident,” said Hansjörg Wirz, European Athletics President.

President Wirz also offered his condolences in a letter to Norwegian Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen.

“We wish you all the best in the demanding time that you are facing. The entire athletics community stands by you in this difficult hour. In addition, we strongly wish all teams who are currently taking part at the European Athletics Junior Championships in Tallinn, Estonia, all the best and good luck,” wrote President Wirz.

As a mark of solidarity on Saturday, a moment of silence was observed at Kadriorg Stadium, where the four-day championships involving 47 countries from across the continent are taking place.

The flag of European Athletics will be at half mast for the remainder of the event.
