Greene will be the tam captain and hopes to lead by example with 12 points in the first track event of the weekend in the Swedish capital, following on from his victories in 2009 and 2010.

“I was surprised to be asked but I’m really proud take on the role of team captain in Stockholm. It’ll be great to lead by example by hopefully scoring maximum points in the first event.

“Five years ago when I went to the European Championships in Gothenburg I never thought I would be a team captain just a few years later, it’s a real honour, especially when there are world champions in the team and other senior figures who could take the role,” said Greene, the fastest European in his event.

Great Britain finished second last year to Russia, although they were 62.5 points adrift, and they were third at the inaugural Championships two years ago.

Among the other leading names in the British team are Barcelona medallists Michael Rimmer, Chris Thompson, Jennifer Meadows and Perri Shakes-Drayton.

The 2006 European Athletics Championships long jump silver medallist Greg Rutherford is also enjoying a run of good consistency in recent weeks, including a just slightly wind-assisted leap of 8.32m at the Samsung Diamond League meet in Eugene, United States, last Saturday.

“I am pleased to be able to name a strong team with a number of athletes having posted promising early season performances so far.
