Pawel Fajdek and Anita Wlodarczyk have ended the season with more glory - after winning the IAAF Hammer Throw Challenge as the competition came to its conclusion at the 43rd Rieti Meeting on Sunday.

Qualifying had taken place the day before with the top four in each event making it through to the final where Fajdek, who won gold at the IAAF world Championships in Moscow with a stunning 81.97m, saved his best to last as he secured the title, even though he did not triumph in this final event.

Krisztian Pars, the Olympic champion from Hungary, had established the best distance in qualifying with 78.17m, and he took that form even further in the final with a third round effort of 79.80m.

Fajdek had by then recorded only three fouls. Now, though, was his moment and in his fourth and final attempt, he reached 76.29m to finish second on the day ahead of Szymon Ziolkowski, of Poland, with 75.30m, and Italy's Nicola Vizzoni with 74.50m.

It was enough to ensure that Fajdek is the overall champion from Pars in second place.

In Moscow, Wlodarczyk missed out on gold by 34 centimetres as Russia's Tatyana Lysenko retained the title with 78.80m but the Polish thrower reversed the placings to the take this hammer challenge title.

And she achieved it in style with a meeting record of 76.57m on a day when she also threw 75.07m and 75.14m, with Lysenko second with 73.90m, American Jevena McCall third with 71.34m and Alexandra Tavernier, of France, in fourth with 67.09m.

It was not all about the hammer challenge and Russia's Irina Gordeeva produced one of the best results of her career as she won the high jump with 1.99m - beating teammate and Olympic champion Anna Chicherova who had a best of 1.96m.

Gordeeva was back in ninth in the final in Moscow with 1.93m as another Russian, Svetlana Shkolina, won with 2.03m with Chicerova, the defending champion, in third with 1.91m.

But this time it was Gordeeva's turn to take the honours and she tried but failed to go even higher with attempts at 2.01m.

Croatia’s World champion Sandra Perkovic had another good day as she achieved a meeting record to win the discus with 66.12m and Hungary's Tamas Kazi broke the Hungarian 800m record when he finished fifth in 1:45.37 as Qatar's Musaeb Balla won with a national record of his own in 1:43.93.

The Netherlands' Susan Kuijken took her 3000m personal best to 8:39.65 with the quickest time by a European this year as she finished fourth as Kenya's Mercy Cherono won in 8:35.97, while Great Britain's Gianni Frankis won the 110m hurdles in 13.63 from French duo Samuel Coco-Viloin, second, in 13.90, and Ladji Doucoure, third in 13.99m.

In the men's shot put, Poland's Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski won with 20.30m.
