When their rivals are looking at which team might pose the best strength at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Budapest next week, there is no doubt that Portugal's women take some beating.

The announcement of their squad for the event in Hungary on Sunday December 9 has two of their star runners at the forefront - Ana Dulce Felix and Sara Moreira.

In Velenje last year, Felix finished second in the individual race behind Ireland's Fionnuala Britton and the team also took silver.

But the event was just the start of a fabulous spell of success for Felix, 30, who had been part of Portugal's gold-medal winning team in Brussels in 2008 and Dublin in 2009.

From the terrain of Slovenia, Felix showed her overall running ability when she then won the 10,000m crown on the track at the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki. Her victory came in 31:44.75, ahead of Britain's Jo Pavey in 31:49.03 and Olha Skrypak, of the Ukraine, third in 31:51.32 and it was outstanding piece of running.

She never panicked and looked in control throughout before extending a lead where she was never going to be caught.

It was the greatest success of Felix's career and she is heading to Budapest in outstanding form.

On Sunday, she won the 8km race at the International Warandecross Tilburg in 27.39.

Felix's teammate Moreira knows only one colour when it comes to the European Cross Country Championship - gold.

She was part of the winning 2009 team in Dublin and 2010 side in Albufeira where in the individual races she finished 10th and ninth respectively.

A world bronze medallist in 2009, Moreira has been a consistent medallist on the track, indoors and out, and after their team silver in Slovenia, Leonor Carneiro returns to the event having finished eighth in the individual race.

Analia Rosa, Ercilia Machado and Sara Carvalho complete one of strongest teams in the competition.
Jose Rocha made the podium in Velenje when he was third as the men's team finished fourth.

He is not back this time but their side looks powerful with Alberto Paulo, Antonio Silva, Bruno Jesus, Fernando Silva, Luis Feiteira and Paulo Gomes bidding for glory.

The rest of the Portugal squad is:

Under-23 men:Diogo Lourenço, Gonçalo Jesus, Hugo Correia, Hugo Santos, Luís Mendes and Rui Pinto.

Under-23 women: Bárbara Ferreira, Catarina Lima, Catarina Ribeiro, Daniela Cunha, Marta Martins and Salomé Rocha.

Junior boys: Bruno Varela, Fernando Mendonça, Guilherme Pinto, Miguel Borges, Miguel Marques and Samuel Barata.

Junior girls: Catarina Gonçalves, Diana Almeida, Jéssica Matos, Sara Sousa, Silvana Dias and Sónia Ferreira.
