Anca Heltne put Spartak Dubnica on top winning the Shot Put and Hammer Throw with personal best performances in the Group B meet of the European Champions Clubs Cup in Dubnica nad Vahom. |
The Slovakian club, relegated to Group B last year, braved not only very strong opposition but also bad weather to top the women's pool at the European Champions Clubs Cup Group B meet in Dubnica nad Vahom on Sunday.
At the end of the day, the two favourites - Spartak Dubnica and Fenerbahce Istanbul - who were relegated from Group A last year prevailed in their respective pools.
However it was not without a contest. The Dubnica women had to contend with a stiff challenge from the girls from Manchester and French side CA Montreuil.
Spartak Dubnica achieved six individual wins and 117 points to emerge as winner ahead of Montreuil (111) and Manchester (110). The women from German LG ASV/DSHS Koln finished fourth with 101 points.
In the men's group Fenerbahce Istanbul with 116 and CA Montreuil (110) were clearly ahead of the others. Phanos Amsterdam indulged in a close contest with Swiss outfit CG Bern with just two points seperating the two who finished third and fourth respectively.
The top two teams are promoted to Group A for the next edition.
Although the weather played spoilsport, their were plenty of impressive performances.
Romanian Anca Heltne, Shot Put bronze medallist at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Torino, who competed as guest athlete for Dubnica, registered her outdoor PB 18.92 and went on to win the Discus with another personal best of 51.15. The two results were better than those achieved by the winner at the Group A meet in Castellon.
World leader Martina Hrasnova tookover from her team-mate and dished out a stunning 68.21 to win the Hammer. European Indoor bronze winner Dana Veldakova of the home side achieved two 14+marks in Triple Jump with 14.01 and 14.10, which again was of the highest international standard.
