Germany’s Samuel Fitwi finished an excellent second on home soil in the 40th anniversary edition of the Hapsa Hamburg Marathon on Sunday (26) morning.
Morocco’s Othmane El Goumri broke away in the last four kilometres for victory in a national record of 2:04:24 with Fitwi following home with a runner-up finish in a lifetime best of 2:04:45, his second sub-2:05 performance of his career.
"I'm very, very happy. The weather cooperated, the atmosphere is fantastic, the city is great. There will definitely be some more celebrating tonight," said Fitwi who moves to tenth on the European all-time list.
This was just the second time Fitwi has finished on the podium in his nine marathons having also won the Hannover Marathon last year in 2:06:29.
Kenya’s Brillian Kipkoech won the women’s race in a lifetime best and course record of 2:17:05, leading three athletes under the 2:20-barrier.
Israel’s Selamawit Teferi, the wife of 2022 European silver medallist Maru, was the leading European finisher in sixth in 2:26:58 while Tabea Themann was the top German in eighth in 2:30:32.
