They are the first faces athletes, coaches, media representatives and spectators meet when they arrive at Rieti 2026. Always present, always helpful and always smiling, the volunteers have become one of the key ingredients behind the success of the European Athletics U18 Championships.
Recognisable by their red shirts, carrying bags filled with everything needed for long days of work—and countless memories—they have spent the week building relationships, exchanging pins and souvenirs, and creating friendships that will remind them forever of the days between 16 and 19 July 2026, when their lives were changed by this unique experience.
Volunteer Coordinator Michele Esposito explains the work behind the scenes. In the months leading up to the championships, he carefully organised a team of more than 450 volunteers, including participants from Brazil, Peru, Great Britain, Germany, France and the Netherlands, alongside hundreds of young people from Rieti and local schools.
"Despite the complex logistics and the high temperatures," says Esposito, "our volunteers have done an extraordinary job. Thanks to their commitment, we have been able to deliver an almost flawless event. We have experienced no major issues on the field of play, in media accreditation or in any other operational area”.
Each volunteer received an official kit, which has become not only practical equipment but also a lasting souvenir of an unforgettable experience to share with family and friends. They have also been provided with services designed to help them cope with long working days, including meals and dedicated rest areas.
But according to Esposito, the team's real strength lies elsewhere.
"Our greatest strength is their smile. They are polite, helpful and always ready to assist. That's the spirit we want to share with everyone who comes to Rieti”.
The championships have also left a lasting mark on a personal level.
"These days have created many friendships—and even a few couples," Esposito smiles. "Many joined because they were encouraged by their schools, but now they've discovered a genuine passion for athletics and for major sporting events”.
International volunteers have also played an important role, helping communication with the visiting delegations.
"They are an invaluable resource. They speak English and make communication with athletes and coaches much easier. Placing them in the athletes' lounge and the delegation areas has proved to be an excellent decision. Three international volunteers are also working in the highly sensitive call room, where every detail matters and clear communication is essential”.
A particularly important contribution has come from the young members of Studentesca Andrea Milardi, who have been working directly in the competition areas.
"They have been exceptional. Their knowledge of athletics and of the Guidobaldi Stadium has been a real added value for the entire organisation," Esposito adds.
Behind the success of Rieti 2026 stands the tireless work of hundreds of volunteers who, through enthusiasm, professionalism and dedication, have helped deliver a memorable edition of the European Athletics U18 Championships—one that will leave a lasting impression on everyone involved.
