Many of the European medallists from the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima will be graduating into the senior ranks next year.
But the European Athletics U23 Championships which take place in Bergen, Norway from 17-20 July will be a big opportunity for some of Europe's leading young athletes to add to their medal tallies.
European Athletics picks out six athletes to watch at next year's European Athletics U23 Championships.
Andreas Fjeld Halvorsen (NOR)
The Norwegians have another middle distance running star in the making and Andreas Fjeld Halvorsen could also be the face of the 2025 European Athletics U23 Championships in Bergen.
Halvorsen made history at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima with his victory in the men’s 3000m, becoming the first non-African man to win a long distance title in the history of a championships which dates back to 1986.
Still only 18, Halvorsen’s profile has risen significantly since his victory in Lima and the teenager will be looking for another title in another age-group on home soil next summer.

Roko Farkas (CRO)
We can expect 19-year-old Roko Farkas to compete in next year’s European Athletics U23 Championships but the question is: in which event…or which events?
Farkas won a surprise gold medal in the long jump at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima with a marginally wind-aided 8.17m but he also reached the 200m semifinal at the European Athletics Championships, an event in which he holds the Croatian record at 20.67.
However, Farkas still considers himself primarily as a decathlete although a shoulder injury has forced him to focus his attentions on other disciplines in 2024. Will we see Farkas return to the combined events fold in Bergen next summer or seek additional medalware in individual events instead?

Tomas Jarvinen (CZE)
If Farkas does choose to compete in the decathlon in Bergen, he can expect to face the newest Czech combined events talent Tomas Jarvinen.
Jarvinen, who has dual Czech-Finnish nationality, won decathlon gold at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima with 8425 points, just missing Niklas Kaul’s world U20 record by an agonising 10 points.
Despite being only 18, Jarvinen has aspirations of qualifying for next year’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo and the decathlon in Bergen could be an important stepping stone en route to a prospective senior championships debut.

Angelina Topic (SRB)
Angelina Topic suffered the heartbreak of missing out on competing in the Olympic high jump final due to an ankle injury but the 19-year-old finished her season - and her junior career - on a high note by winning gold at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima.
In doing so, Topic emulated the achievements of her coach and father Dragutin who jumped to world U20 gold all the way back at the 1990 World Athletics U20 Championships in Plovdiv.
Already a two-time European senior medallist, Topic will be the outstanding favourite to complete the set of European age-group titles having won U18 gold in 2022 and U20 gold in 2023.

Iosif Kesidis (CYP)
Cyprus has only won one gold medal in European Athletics U23 Championships history but 19-year-old Iosif Kesidis will be a good bet to double his country’s title tally in Bergen next summer.
A prolific teenager, Kesidis capped his junior career by winning gold in the hammer at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima with 82.80m to win gold by more than seven metres and move to sixth on the world U20 all-time list with the 5kg implement.

Kesidis produced a full series of valid throws in the final and all six of his throws would have been good enough to win gold in Lima where he became the first ever Cypriot athlete to win a world U20 title in any discipline.
Lurdes Gloria Manuel (CZE)
Her performance might have got somehow overlooked as Natalia Kaczmarek and Rhasidat Adeleke battled for 400m gold in Rome but Lurdes Gloria Manuel performed excellently in the final, finishing fourth at the age of 18.
But Manuel took all the plaudits at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima where the Czech athlete dominated the 400m final, winning gold in 51.29 to accompany her European U20 gold medal from 2023.

Manuel, who also reached the semifinals in Paris 2024, has improved to 50.52 this summer which makes her the fourth fastest European U20 400m runner in history and was the fastest time by a European junior in over 30 years.
