Despite the late withdrawal of the world record chasing star attraction Olympic gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson, there were four national records set at the eponymous Keely Klassic in Birmingham on Saturday (15).
Hodgkinson’s training partner, Olympic 1500m bronze medallist Georgia Hunter-Bell impressed again at the World Indoor Tour Bronze meeting, winning the 1500m in 4:00.63, the second fastest time in the world this year and just over a second outside Laura Muir’s four-year old British record. She was followed home by Sarah Healy in an Irish national record of 4:01.62.
National records
Olympic 4x400m bronze medallist Lina Nielsen won the 300m in a British record of 36.53. And in another less conventional distance race, Samuel Chapple won the men’s 1000m in a Dutch record of 2:16.09, he was followed by Neil Gourley with a British record of 2:17.20.

The Hungarian led at the break and was never seriously threatened as he was followed home by Portugal’s João Coelho, fourth in last year’s World Indoor Championships, in 46.37.
France’s Aurel Manga is showing a welcome return to form this winter and the 2018 world indoor bronze medallist continued his renaissance in the men’s 60m hurdles. First up, he set a new meeting record of 7.59 in the heats, then clocked the same time in winning the final.
There was a thrilling women’s high jump competition with three athletes setting a new joint meeting record of 1.87m.
By virtue of her first time clearance, Germany’s Imke Onnen was the winner, followed by Czechia’s Michaela Hruba and Estonia’s Elisabeth Pihela who both cleared the winning height at the third attempt.
There was another meeting record in the women's 1500m. Spain's European 5000m bronze medallist Marta Garcia won in 4:08.78.
Bonnin improves PB, Sasma equals Turkish record
At the Perche en Or pole vault meeting in Roubaix on Saturday (15), European U23 champion Marie-Julie Bonnin improved her lifetime best with a clearance of 4.71m to win the women’s competition.
Following a narrow miss on her second attempt, she cleared the bar at the third attempt to thrill the home crowd. She made three valiant attempts before bowing out at 4.76m.
In the men’s competition at the World Indoor Tour bronze meeting, Türkiye’s Ersu Şaşma equalled his own national record of 5.90m to win the competition.
His second attempt at 6.00m was his best effort and his bid to join the six metre club is on hold, for now. There was also a Latvian record for Valters Kreiss with 5.82m.
