Ciara Mageean will be a very strong medal contender
for the 1500m gold in Tallinn.

A strong team of 15 Irish junior athletes, 6 girls and 9 boys, has been announced for the European Athletics Junior Championships in Tallinn, Estonia, from 21 to 24 July.

Irish Junior athletes come from all over the country having qualified for Tallinn 2011 through a wide range of qualifying events.

Ireland has had a good record of success at the European juniors. So far Irish athletes have won three gold medals at the event - Nick O’Brien in the 3,000m in 1985, Mark Carroll in the 5,000m in 1991, and by Colin Costello in the 1,500m in 2005.

In addition, Ireland has won three silver medals at European juniors, including one by John Treacy in 1975, and four bronze medals, for a total of 10 medals so far.
