European Athletics is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Janez Aljančič, Honorary Council Member and a lifelong servant of the sport, who died at the age of 87. Born on 18 September 1937 in Maribor, Slovenia.

Janez devoted his entire life to athletics—as an athlete, official, architect, volunteer, and international leader whose influence helped shape the modern athletics landscape in Slovenia and beyond.

Highest recognition

Janez Aljančič was appointed Honorary Council Member of European Athletics in 2011, after serving 16 years on the European Athletics Council, including as President of the Development Committee and a member of the Executive Board.

His contributions were recognised at the highest levels of the sport, earning him both the Plaque of Merit from European Athletics and World Athletics—the top honours awarded by both organisations for lifetime service.

Reflecting on his legacy, European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov said: "Janez Aljančič was a pioneer whose vision and dedication helped shape not only Slovenian athletics but also the development of our sport across Europe.

"As the first Slovenian elected to the European Athletics Council in 1995, and later as President of the Development Committee, he played a vital role in building stronger federations and advancing our sport at every level. Janez’s legacy will endure—as a leader and a tireless servant of athletics. On behalf of European Athletics, I extend our deepest condolences to his family and the entire athletics community.”

Great energy and versatility

A man of great energy and versatility, Janez first made his mark as a steeplechase runner, once winning the Slovenian title and representing the Yugoslav national team. After a skiing injury ended his football ambitions, he found new purpose on the athletics track and never looked back.

He transitioned into coaching, officiating, and administration, eventually serving as President of the Slovenian Athletics Federation (AZS) from 1992 to 1997 and remaining active in its leadership throughout his life.

Professionally trained as an architect, he also left a legacy in sports infrastructure, working for two decades at the Design Bureau of engineer Stanko Bloudek and serving 12 years as its director. His passion for both design and athletics culminated in projects such as the planned renovation of the historic Plečnik stadium, and he was awarded the Bloudek Award in 1983 for his contributions to sport and facility design.

Outside the stadium, Janez was also an avid mountaineer, organising expeditions including the first Yugoslav mission to Mount McKinley. Yet it was in athletics that his spirit truly soared.

His leadership in organising events like the Friendship Run and Ljubljana City Hike brought thousands together, elevated Slovenian athletics on the international stage, and helped pave the way for the country’s swift integration into the European and global athletics family.

His remarkable service earned him international honours including the European Athletics Golden Veteran Pin (2004), the IAAF Golden Veteran Pin (2005), and a Diploma of Merit from the International Olympic Committee (2006).

Janez Aljančič will be remembered not only for his achievements but for his warmth, humility, and unwavering dedication to the sport he loved. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of athletes, officials, and volunteers across Europe.
