Susanna Kallur has never let injury or adversity get the better of her and now she is ready for one more tilt at a major medal.
Tomorrow Kallur will celebrate her 36th birthday and there is no sign of her stopping in her pursuit of glory after being in the initial wave of names for Sweden's squad at next month's European Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade.
The 60m hurdles gold medallist in Madrid in 2005 and Birmingham in 2007, Kallur returned to this high level last summer at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam when many must have thought injury had beaten her and reached the semi-finals.
Then last Saturday in Tampere, she proved her form again by winning in 8.06 to move to 10th on the European Athletics rankings.
Time might suggest that next month will be the final occasion the sport sees Kallur at the European Athletics Indoor Championships and if that is the case, the crowd will be witnessing one of the best sprinters of her generation who may have won so much more had injuries not been so cruel.
But what a story it would be if she made the podium in Belgrade.
Kallur has become one of the greats of European Athletics, winning the 100m hurdles at the U23 Championships in Bydgoszcz in 2003 and the European Athletics Championships title, fittingly, in Gothenburg in 2006, the latter triumph sandwiched in between her double European indoor gold.
The first of those came on an emotional day in Madrid when she won in a national record of 7.80, just 0.19 ahead of her twin sister Jenny who took silver.
It was a sensational outcome and then, two years later in Birmingham, Susanna was back again to successfully defend her title in 7.87.
She is one of 15 athletes selected by Sweden for the European Athletics Indoor Championships between 3-5 March, with the remainder of their squad being announced next Tuesday.
