European outdoor silver medallist Emmanouil Karalis scaled an outright Greek record of 6.01m in the pole vault at the Greek Indoor Championships on Saturday (22) evening to move to equal second on the 2025 world list.

Karalis had already set a Greek indoor record of 5.95m but the Olympic bronze medallist delivered an outright national record to an enthusiastic audience in Piraeus on the outskirts of Athens with a 6.01m clearance to rewrite the record books.

After clearing 6.01m, Karalis attempted to clear 6.08m, a height which has only been surpassed by Sergiy Bubka (6.15m), Renaud Lavillenie (6.16m) and world record-holder Armand Duplantis (6.26m).

And with Duplantis not expected to compete at the Apeldoorn 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships from 6-9 March, Karalis will be looking to land his first senior title after coming away with silver in Istanbul two years ago.

Karalis was one of a select band of athletes to come away with medals from all three major senior championships in 2024, taking bronze at the World Athletics Indoor Championships and Olympic Games as well as silver at the 2024 European Athletics Championships.
