Kozmus, the Olympic champion, triumphed with 77.69m in the IAAF Hammer Challenge where the next scoring event will be in Moscow itself.
The Championships start on August 10 and Kozmus will need that third scoring result to move him higher in the rankings for this event itself, even though gold will be on his mind in Russia.
He triumphed here ahead of Slovakia's Marcel Lomnicky with 77.66m and Ukraine's Oleksandr Sokyrskyy, who was third with 76.35m.
But it was not a good event for Poland's Pawel Fajdek, the newly-crowned Universiade champion, as he failed to land a legal throw.
In the challenge itself, Hungary's Krisztian Pars remains top with 242.50 points from Lukas Melich, of the Czech Republic, with 239.44 and Tajikstan's Dilshod Nazarov with 235.52.
Sweden's Irene Ekelund is only 16 but she is creating a brilliant reputation as her performance in Donetsk as fortnight ago proved when she won the 200m at the World Youth Championships in 22.92.
This time she won in 23.27 as she beat fellow Swede Moa Hjelmer, who was second in 23.54, with Norway's Elisabeth Slettum third in 24.30.
Ekelund also ran 11.66 to finish third in the 110m as Norway's Ezinne Okparaebo won in 11.56 from Cleo VanBuren, of the USA, in 11.62.
And it was a Norwegian double in the 100m as into a headwind of -1.2, Jaysuma Saidy Ndure won the men's race in 10.50 from South Africa's Hannes Dreyer, second in 10.54, with Sweden's Tom Kling-Baptiste third in 10.77.
Erica Jarder produced a meeting record in the long jump which she won in 6.58m. The Swedish athlete triumphed by 20 centimetres from Latvia's Mara Griva with 6.38m and Great Britain's Alexandra Russell with 6.16m.
In the men's event, Michel Torneus was beaten into second by just one centimetre.
Torneus has had a fabulous 12 months, winning bronze at the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki and then silver at the
European Athletics Indoor Championships on home soil in Göteborg in March.
But his 7.77m was not enough here as Dutchman Ignisious Gaisah won with 7.78m.
Estonia's Risto Matas reached 81.31m to take the javelin ahead of home favourite Kim Amb who was second with 79.79m.
Amb is eighth in the European Athletics ranking this summer with 84.33, so it was a fine win for Matas, with another Swede Gabriel Wallin, third with 74.41m.
