gold medal at the European Athletics Junior Championships in
Tallinn.

Yelena Lashmanova claimed the first gold of the European Athletics Junior Championships when she clocked a record time of 42:59.48 in the women's 10,000m walk in the Estonian capital city of Tallinn in July.

Her time has now been officially ratified by the IAAF as a junior world record.

The previous record of 43:11.34 was set by her compatriot Vera Sokolov in Kaunas, Lithuania in July 2005.

With her victory in Tallinn, the Russian added the European junior title to the world youth and junior crowns she has picked up over the last two years.

The 19-year-old is one of the nominees for the 2011 European Athletics Rising Star. Click here to cast your vote.

The athletes will be feted at the European Athletics Awards Night presented by Mondo in the Spanish city of Arona on 15 October.
