  • Men's 3000m steeplechase report | European record-holder Ruppert holds on for gold

European record holder Frederik Ruppert crowned his year as the continent’s finest men’s 3000m steeplechaser by winning gold at the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships on Sunday (16).

In summary

  • Ruppert front-runs his way to first European title
  • Querinjean wins Luxembourg’s second-ever European medal
  • Bebendorf wins second successive bronze with last-lap burst

The German led for virtually the whole race but had to fend off a spirited charge from Ruben Querinjean, who won only the second medal for Luxembourg in European Athletics Championships history.

Ruppert crossed the line in 8:25.33, just 0.28 ahead of Querinjean. Germany’s Karl Bebendorf left it late but repeated his result from Roma 2024, winning bronze in 8:26.65.

Spain’s Daniel Arce, who won European bronze at Munich 2022, did most of the heavy lifting up front with Ruppert. But with little over a lap to go, the whole of the 16-strong field was still in medal contention.

Ruppert surged at the bell and Querinjean overtook Arce, briefly threatening the German favourite. But Ruppert negotiated the water jump and final barrier expertly to maintain his grip on gold.

Querinjean chased him home for silver, joining David Fiegen, who won men’s 800m silver at Gothenburg 2006, as the only Luxembourg athletes ever to have won medals at the European Athletics Championships.

Bebendorf sat at the rear of the pack for the bulk of the race but sliced through the field on the final lap, catching Arce off the final turn before sprinting away for bronze.

Arce had to settle for fourth in 8:27.02.

What they said...

Frederik Ruppert: "I led that from start to finish to stay out of trouble. I'm pretty bad in the middle of the field so my best option was to hit the front. It was hard to get the inside rail at the end but luckily I had a couple of extra gears.

"My strength in the flat races is helping me a lot, it gives me confidence that I'm the best long distance runner in the field, which helps a lot, especially as I'm not the best technician. I need to make sure I have other strengths to win these races.

"German steeplechasing is amazing, we have so many great athletes, even athletes that are pushing from behind. The great competition in Germany is helping us a lot. Me and Karl (Bebendorf) are getting faster each season, which comes from everyone else also improving and pushing us.

"I would love to step up to a global podium but we will have to see. Conditions here were much better than Tokyo where it was too hot for me. I hope from today and this season my performances will give me the confidence to push the top guys like El-Bakkali and hopefully get a medal at the Worlds or Olympics."

Ruben Querinjean: "I felt very strong going into that last lap but was not sure quite how much I had left as we hit the bend. I thought I had a chance in the final 100m and I gave it my all.

"I was not sure how my legs would be after the heat earlier this week. I thought I should wait until the last few metres to really kick. Maybe I should have gone earlier but I am really happy with silver.

"The crowd here tonight were so noisy and the support on the home straight really helped me. It was an incredible atmosphere and it gave me so much energy.

"I am so proud to be the first medallist for Luxembourg in these champs and I hope it will inspire lots of youngsters to take up athletics at home, maybe even the steeplechase."

Karl Bebendorf: "I give everything and this is a disappointment, especially in the moment but I try not to show that. I'm not super happy with the bronze. I'm still coming for gold. In the end it's still a medal but my ambitions are so much higher.

"I made some technical mistakes today. I had a good kick on the last lap but it wasn't enough for gold. When I get back to work, hopefully I'll learn from this and be the best.

"The pace during the race was not super quick, but it was good for me. I just started from a position that was too far behind and that was the biggest problem for me.

"It's sad for me at the moment, but I'm not at the end and I think I still have some good years ahead of me."
