Legendary American sprinter Michael Johnson has been confirmed as the keynote speaker and guest of honour at this year’s scottishathletics International Coaching Conference and Annual Awards Dinner, which will take place at the Marriot Hotel, Glasgow, on Saturday 18 November.
Winner of five Olympic gold medals, ten World Championship gold medals and world record holder over 200m and 400m, Johnson is one of the most respected voices in the world of athletics. His appearance has been made possible thanks in the main to funding from scottishathletics’ leading sponsor Bank of Scotland, supplemented with additional support from Glasgow City Council, sportscotland and the Dallas Trust.
During his two-day visit to Scotland, Johnson will also take in a Bank of Scotland Talented Athlete coaching clinic at the Kelvin Hall, appear at the Easterhouse coaching project - where he will meet the team behind Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games bid - and also a lunchtime meeting with Bank of Scotland staff and guests at their newly refurbished headquarters in Edinburgh.
Johnson said: “This was a ‘yes’ from me as soon as scottishathletics outlined what they had in mind. Scotland has really good memories for me because that’s where I first made a breakthrough over 200m on the European circuit in 1990. Coaches and athletes are the sport’s most valuable asset. I know that scottishathletics knows that. Let’s get together and have a great coaching conference!”
Tickets for the one-day conference are priced at £60 for non members of scottishathletics.
