European U23 finalist Jake Minshull shocked former world indoor champion Alexander Doom, winning the men’s 400m at the scottishathletics EAP International in Glasgow on Saturday (31).
The 21-year-old British athlete, who was fifth in the men’s 400m hurdles final at the 2025 European U23 Championships in Bergen, enjoyed one of the biggest victories of his career, holding off Belgian Doom to win in 46.51 — more than a second faster than his previous indoor personal best.
Minshull exploded from the blocks at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Challenger meeting and led at the bell, closely tracked by Doom, who is the reigning European champion outdoors.
As they moved into the closing straight, it looked like Doom might accelerate past, as he did on the same track against Karsten Warholm to take gold at the Glasgow 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships.
But Minshull held firm, resisting the late charge to beat the Belgian by 0.11 seconds.
Stoney surprises Nielsen in women's 400m
There was another surprise in the women’s 400m, with Great Britain’s Louisa Stoney coming out on top across three heats. She won heat three in 52.08 ahead of Portugal’s Sofia Lavreshina in 52.19, with both athletes rewarded with personal bests.
That result meant her more illustrious British compatriot Laviai Nielsen, fourth on this track in the women’s 400m final at the 2024 World Indoor Championships, had to settle for third overall after winning heat one in 52.37.
Dramatic finishes in 60m finals
The 60m finals were tightly contested. Great Britain’s former European U20 champion Joy Eze won the women’s race in 7.26, edging Jasmine Wilkins by just 0.01 seconds.
The men’s race was even closer, with Toluwabori Akinola judged the winner on the photo finish after he and Hungary’s Dominik Illovszky were both timed at 6.59. European indoor bronze medallist Andrew Robertson finished third in 6.70.
European U23 4x100m gold medallist Alyson Bell won the women’s 200m in 23.39. In the field, Ireland’s Lauren Callaghan claimed victory in the women’s long jump with a personal best of 6.40m.
