Morgan Lake got the better of European silver medallist Angelina Topic in the women’s high jump at the Filothei Women Gala in Athens, Greece on Wednesday (10). 

British athlete Lake, who was fourth in at the Budapest 2023 World Athletics Championships and Serbia’s Topic both cleared 1.95m. 

Crucially, Lake went over at the first attempt and Topic at her second attempt and when both failed at 1.99m, the British athlete took the win on countback. It was a season’s best for Lake. 

Masson takes big leap forward in triple jump

At the same World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting, Belgium national champion Ilona Masson leapt to a windy 14.41m (+5.6m/s) to win the women’s triple jump. In a memorable competition for the 25-year-old she backed it up with a leap of 13.98 (+0.8m/s) to set an official personal best.

Former European U20 champion Milica Gardašević of Serbia was close to her best, winning the women’s long jump with 6.71m (-0.6m/s).

Swiss athlete Vancardo makes 800m breakthrough

Meanwhile at another meeting live streamed by European Athletics, the Kladno hází and Kladno memorials in Kladno, Czechia on Wednesday (10), Switzerland’s Veronica Vancardo went below two minutes for the first time ever in the women’s 800m.

She clocked 1:59.81, lopping 1.55 off her personal best set just last month. The 24-year-old kicked clear around the final turn and stayed strong to the finish for a significant breakthrough and a new meeting record.

Season's best for Lincoln

In the men’s shot put, Britain’s Scott Lincoln won with a season’s best 21.09m, getting the better of 2021 European indoor champion Tomáš Staněk (20.71m) and current European indoor champion Andrei Toader (19.98m). Germany’s Katharina Maisch won the women’s shot put with 18.71m.

Czechia’s Volodymyr Myslyvchuk won the men’s hammer with a final round 75.98m and Germany’s Steven Richter, winner at this year’s European Throwing Cup in Nicosia, won the men’s discus with 63.53m. Whilst in the men’s high jump, Belgium’s Jef Vermeiren set a meeting record 2.24m to take victory.

Sophie Becker, a member of Ireland’s European 4x400m silver medal winning quartet, won the women’s 400m with 51.83.
