There is one year to go until the European Athletics Team Championships Division 1 takes place in Madrid (27-29 June 2025).

It will be the first time Spain has hosted the biennial event since the event was created in 2009. Although Madrid (1996) and Malaga (2006) both hosted the European Cup, the previous incarnation of Europe’s biggest team competition for Member Federations.

Italy set for strong defence

Italy will be defending the title they won for the first time ever when the last event took place in Silesia, Poland in 2023.

And with record-breaking results for the Italian team at the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships on 7-12 June, where they won 24 medals including 11 gold, they will once again present a formidable challenge.

They will compete against teams from Poland, Germany, Spain, Great Britain & NI, Netherlands, France. Portugal, Czechia, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Greece and the three promoted nations Hungary, Ukraine and Lithuania.

The event will take place at the Edstadio de Vallehermoso on a track laid by European Athletics' preferred suppliers Conica.

Rich Spanish heritage

Dobromir Karamarinov, President, European Athletics said: “We look forward to a memorable Madrid 2025 European Athletics Team Championships with our trusted colleagues at the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation.

“Spain has such a rich heritage in our sport, including hosting some of our most prestigious events, including the European Athletics Championships (Barcelona 2010), European Indoor Athletics Championships (Madrid 2005, Valencia 1998, Madrid 1986, San Sebastian 1977) and the European Cross Country Championship (Toro 2007).

“We are sure Madrid 2025 will be another historic occasion with the very best European athletes competing in one of Europe’s great cities.”

Raúl Chapado, President of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation said: “I am thrilled to welcome all participants and fans to this prestigious event. Hosting this championship is an incredible honour for Madrid, a city and a region with a rich athletic heritage.

"Our team is dedicating immense effort to ensure a perfect event, celebrating both athletic excellence and European unity. We look forward to witnessing remarkable performances and creating unforgettable memories together. Thank you for your support and participation. See you in Madrid!"
