This past weekend some of Europe’s throws athletes opened their seasons ahead of potentially competing at the European Throwing Cup on 14 and 15 March in Nicosia, Cyprus.
The Rome 2024 European Athletics Championships gold medallist, Sara Fantini, threw 72.38m at the Italian Winter Throwing Championships for her second best season opener and an early world lead on Sunday (15), Last year Fantini placed third at the Throwing Cup with 72.37m, behind Finland's Silja Kosonen and France's Rose Loga.
Apeldoorn 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships silver medallist Wictor Petersson extended his seasons best to 21.38m, for his second best ever throw, at the Adax Locked-In meet, a World Indoor Tour challenger meet, on Saturday (14).
The Swede's throw is also the European leading mark indoors this year, while Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri leads the overall world standings with 22.50m which he through outdoors in South Africa on 11 February.
Fabbri teased on Instagram that his indoor season is about to start, so we should expect to see the reigning European champion competing indoors this year soon, but he could also have his eye on the European Throwing Cup.
European indoor medallist Fanny Roos also competed at the Adax Locked-In meet and also threw a seasons best of 18.76m to go sixth in Europe so far this year.
She narrowly beat Germany’s Katharina Maisch who threw 18.14m in Sweden after throwing 19.02m at the Rochlitz Shot Put Meeting on 1 February.
The reigning two-time European U23 champion Artur Felfner also opened his season on Sunday (15) where he threw 78.55m at the Ukraine Winter Throwing Championship in Kyiv to take the European lead and place second on the world standings.
The 22-year-old has competed at the European Throwing Cup twice before, winning the U23 competition in 2023 and the senior group in 2024. He could return next month after his impressive season opener with a strong chance of winning the title yet again.
