European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov has celebrated the achievements of European athletes at the World Athletics Championships, which concluded in Tokyo on Sunday (21).

“Congratulations to all of the athletes, their coaches, support teams and the Member Federations on an incredible World Athletics Championships in Tokyo for Europe,” he said.

“European athletes won 47 medals, the same number as in Budapest 2023 World Athletics Championships. In Tokyo it consisted of 12 gold, 17 silver and 18 bronze.

"While in Budapest, Europeans won 16 gold medals, in Tokyo no fewer than 21 European nations reached the podium, three more than in 2023. This shows the incredible breadth of talent across the continent.

“It was also remarkable to see the variety of events in which Europeans triumphed. Medals came not only in our traditional strongholds but across the entire programme.

“In every single event group – sprints, hurdles, relays, middle and long distance, race walking, jumps, throws and combined events – Europeans reached the podium. This is a true testament to the depth and strength of athletics in Europe.

Exceptional performances

“There were also some truly exceptional performances. Mondo Duplantis’ (SWE) incredible world record of 6.30m in the men’s pole vault and there were other world leading marks from Europeans, including Pedro Pichardo (POR) in men’s triple jump (17.91m), Femke Bol (NED) in the women’s 400m hurdles (51.54) and Maria Perez (ESP) in the women’s 20k race walk (1:25:54).

“We should also congratulate Duplantis, Perez, Bol and Daniel Stahl (SWE) for defending the world titles they won two years ago in Budapest.

“We look forward to welcoming them and the rest of Europe’s medallists to the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships as the biggest athletics competition that will take place next year.

“I would also like to congratulate the European athletes elected to the World Athletics Athletes’ Commission and their representation on the global stage: Andreas Almgren (SWE), Lia Apostolovski (SLO), Lisanne de Witte (NED), Anna Ryzhykova (UKR) and Gia Trevisan (ITA).

“In the short-term we are also excited to formally recognising the very best performers in Tokyo at the European Athletics Golden Tracks Awards in Batumi, Georgia on 25 October and celebrating what has been a memorable year for European athletics.”
