European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov has hailed the outstanding achievements of European athletes at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing China on 21-23 March.
“I am incredibly proud of the outstanding performances of our European athletes at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing,” he commented. “Their excellence on the global stage deserves the highest recognition, and I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of them."
With 11 gold medals won across seven Member Federations and a total of 34 medals secured by 20 European nations, Europe was the most successful Area Association at the championships.
This achievement further cements the strength of European athletics, coming just two weeks after the successful Apeldoorn 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships in the Netherlands.
Karamarinov acknowledged the exceptional efforts of athletes who excelled in both Apeldoorn and Nanjing.
“This indoor season has been particularly demanding with both championships taking place within a fortnight,” he reflected. “But this makes the achievements of Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Jeremiah Azu, Andy Diaz Hernandez, Sander Skotheim, and Saga Vanninen – all of whom won gold medals in both championships – even more remarkable.”
Attention turns to Madrid and Maribor
Looking ahead, Karamarinov emphasized the importance of the upcoming European Athletics Team Championships in June, which will take place across Madrid and Maribor.
“We look forward to seeing many of the medal winners competing for their countries again in June across the three divisions of the European Athletics Team Championships. This will be another important stepping stone on the road to the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.”
