European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov has paid tribute to the athletes, officials and organisers at the conclusion of the European Athletics Team Championships which took place in Madrid and Maribor (24-29 June).
Italy retained their 1st Division title in Madrid, whilst Belgium and Iceland won the 2nd and 3rd Division titles respectively in Maribor. Across the three divisions, there were 13 championship records, three world leads, eight European leads and 56 national records.
“From Maribor to Madrid, we witnessed unforgettable team spirit and outstanding performances,” he said.
“Congratulations to Italy on successfully defending their European Athletics Team Championships title.
“My warmest congratulations also go to all the athletes who competed this week, not only chasing results but proudly representing something greater than themselves: their countries. Records were broken, and history was made.
“The unique green track created by European Athletics preferred suppliers CONICA in Madrid’s Estadio Vallehermoso proved to be superb surface for athletes to show the very best of themselves.
“Thanks to all our judges, referees, volunteers and staff who worked tirelessly in such warm summer conditions and deliver yet another memorable edition of the Championships.
“Sincere thanks to the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation and the Atletska zveza Slovenije, and to my dear friends and fellow leaders Raúl Chapado Raul and Primoz Fegus and your dedicated teams – thank you for your warm hospitality and excellence in hosting.
