European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov visited the Athletes’ Zone, a new initiative launched during the European Athletics U20 Championships in Tampere on Friday (8).
The Athletes’ Zone is a welcoming environment where athletes can connect, relax, and explore important topics that matter both on and off the track. This new concept aligns closely with the core mission of "Race for Respect" to promote safeguarding, human rights, and mental health and well-being across European Athletics.
What is the Athletes’ Zone?
It is an interactive and empowering space that blends fun, learning, and meaningful engagement. From the Escape Game, which explores safeguarding and mental health scenarios, to light-hearted activities such as the Photo Booth and Tattoo Station, every element is designed to spark curiosity and conversation.
President Karamarinov shared his impressions: “I was truly happy to see the Athletes' Zone full of smiling faces and amazing atmosphere, a space built for our athletes, where they can have fun, play, and learn. It is the first time we’ve created something like this, and I believe we must continue to grow it.
"This is their dedicated space and safe zone: a place where athletes are not only welcome to speak up, but also encouraged to do so. Just as we ask athletes to raise their voices, we must be ready to listen, to learn, and to act.
"I would like to thanks also to our four volunteers Femke, Carina, Philip and Tina who are part of our youth community, who are interacting with our athletes and responsible for great atmosphere. I hope all our athletes enjoy their space here in Tampere and know that their voices matter.
"Congratulations to all athletes who have competed so far, especially Polish star Hubert Troscianka for his outstanding performance and for setting a new World U20 record in the decathlon. I also wish the best of luck to everyone competing over the next two days!"
