President Wiz was accompanied by European Athletics Vice President Karel Pilný. The two leaders had elaborate discussions with the Polish athletics federation President Jerzy Skucha, Secretary General Jan …šl„™zak, Vice President Janusz Krynicki and Sports Director-Head Coach Piotr Haczek on a range of topics.
The major discussions focused on the system of coaching in Poland, the structure of the federation, the ties with political establishments in order to procure governmental support for infrastructure development, the athletics programme on the continent, and the condition of master’s sport and road running in Poland.
“We are impressed with what Poland is doing as an athletics nation, and I wholeheartedly support the Polish federation’s efforts to build a track and field stadium in Warsaw. European Athletics is committed to offer support to the Polish athletics federation and all its Member Federations in the common goal of developing our sport at all levels,” said President Wirz.
“Polish athletes have a strong presence at all European Athletics events and I call upon the Polish athletics federation to make their strongest efforts to ensure all its stars are present at this summer’s European Athletics Championships in Helsinki.”
President Wirz praised the Polish system of coaching which has produced a number of world-beating athletes in recent years. He also wished luck to the group “Klub Polska-Londyn 2012” (Poland-London 2012 Club), which is preparing prospective medal winners for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The President also visited the Polish Museum of Sports and was present at the opening ceremony of the Polish Indoor Championships in Spala that was held over the weekend.
