Former international triple jumper Raul Chapado was elected to be the 21st President of the Spanish athletics federation (RFEA) on Saturday.
The 46-year-old Chapado beat his only challenger Isidoro Hornillos by 105 votes to 48 after the decision of former European Athletics Council Member and current IAAF Treasurer Jose Maria Odriozola not to seek re-election after being president of the federation since 1989.
Chapado, 15-times a Spanish champion in his speciality, is still the Spanish triple jump indoor record holder with 16.87m, his personal best which he jumped in 1998.
He represented Spain at the 1997 and 1999 World Championships and 2000 Olympic Games, as well as at the 1998 European Athletics Championships and twice at the European Athletics Indoor Championships.
He won medals at both the 2001 Mediterranean Games and 1998 Ibero-American Championships.
Professionally, following the end of his competitive career, he was Director of Sports, Operations and Projects when Madrid was the candidate for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games and then Director General of Sports for the Madrid bid for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
He is a professor on the Sports Leadership and Innovation Programme at the Deusto Business School and a professor of sports law at the Escuela Universitaria Real Madrid (Universidad Europea).
