Reigning European champions Niklas Kaul and Konstanze Klosterhalfen have been added to Germany’s team for the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships from 7-12 June.

Kaul will defend his decathlon title in Rome while Klosterhalfen, who won European 5000m gold in Munich 2022, has been named in the 10,000m team.

Languishing in seventh with two events remaining, Kaul charged to an unforgettable gold medal in Munich, landing the javelin at 76.05m before wrapping up the title with an inspired 4:10.04 in the 1500m to follow in the footsteps of teammate Arthur Abele who won decathlon gold in Berlin 2018.

And with reigning champions receiving a wildcard, Kaul will be one of four German decathletes in the Stadio Olimpico alongside Manuel Eitel, Tim Nowak and Felix Wolter.

After finishing fourth in the 10,000m in Munich, Klosterhalfen doubled back to win the 5000m gold two years ago. She has been named on the 10,000m team for Roma 2024 and will also be eligible to defend her 5000m title by virtue of being the reigning champion.

The European 10,000m Cup will be held in conjunction with the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships and the German women will be looking to retain the team title they won last year in Pacé.

Kaul and Klosterhalfen will join fellow reigning European champion Richard Ringer - the marathon gold medallist in Munich 2022 - who was announced as part of Germany’s half marathon team last month.

The full German team selection for the 10,000m, 20km race walk, half marathon and combined events can be found here
