  • Samokov to host 2014 SPAR European Cross Country Championships

The next SPAR European Cross Country Championships will be held in Samokov, Bulgaria on 14 December 2014.

The decision was approved during the European Athletics council meeting in Berlin in May 2013.

The competition is held over a single day with six races taking place in the following order:

Junior Women 4 km

Junior Men 6 km

Under 23 Women 6 km

Under 23 Men 8 km

Senior Women 8 km

Senior Men 10 km

There will be an individual race as well as separate team standings for each race.

The scores of the four first athletes from the same country will be added together to create a total score for each country.

In 2013 in Belgrade, it was Great Britain who dominated the rest of the field finishing top of the medals table with nine from France's four and the three from Belgium and Spain.

In the senior women’s race it was Sophie Duarte of France who claimed gold, putting an end to Fionnuala Britton’s run of success at the European championships.

On the men’s side it was Alemayehu Bezabeh who stole the show, leading Spain to gold in the team event.

We look forward to seeing how Emelia Gorecka, who triumphed in the junior category in Belgrade, will fare against Amela Terzic and Sifan Hassan as she competes in the under-23 age group for the first time in Samokov.
