As expected Britain's Adam Gemili led the 100m qualifiers into the next round with a controlled 10.42 on the first morning of the 2013 European Athletics U23 Championships in Tampere.

In the first heat team-mate Deji Tobais was impressive, easing up in 10.47 for the second fastest through to the evening's semis. Italy's Francesco Basciani and Croatia's Dario Horvat clocked 10.48 and 10.49 to complete the top four.

Coolest in the one lap hurdles was Britain's Niall Flannery who secured his place in the next round with the only sub-50 clocking of 49.97. Season leader Emir Bekric of Serbia appeared to find the going tough along with medal shot Rasmus Magi of Estonia while Ireland's Thomas Barr impressed in the final heat emerging as second fastest behind the Briton in 50.11.

A below par Jack Green of Great Britain, the defending champion, failed to finish.

Dominik Witczak of Poland leads the shot qualifiers into the evening's final with a second round throw of 18.91. Mikhail Abramchuk of Belarus and Czech Martin Novak were the only others through by right. Leader in the season's rankings, Jakub Szyszkowski of Poland, progressed in fifth while local boy, Arttu Kangas, was half a metre below his season's personal best to make the final in eighth overall.

Season leader in the hammer, Quentin Bigot of France, confirmed his favourite status with 73.06 to clear his path to Saturday's final. Belarus's Zakhar Makhrosenka on 71.75 was just 12cm ahead of Moldova's Serghei Marghiev, both qualifying by right. Ireland's Conor McCullough pulled out a season's best of 69.40 to progress in sixth overall.

No one succeeded in surpassing the qualifying mark of 78m in the javelin, Latvia's Rolands Strobinders getting closest with 77.93. The longest thrower in the field this year, Thomas Rohler of Germany, was 10m below his best for 2013, qualifying in sixth with 73.91.

Kai Kazmirek of Germany leads the Decathlon with 2531 points, 18 points ahead of France's Jeremy Lelievre with Adam Helcelet of the Czech Republic third. Kazmirek kicked off with PBs in the 100m (10.81) and the long jump (7.58) but the shot is not his strongest event and he could only manage 13.09. The Frenchman, however, went out to 15.10 in the circle to move up the leader board. Germany's Johannes Hock lies just one point down on the Czech with Britain's Ashley Bryant both a further three points down. Bryant enjoyed two PBs in the long jump and added a third in the shot for a satisfying opening session.

Flying Dutchwoman
Season leader Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands got her 100m campaign off to a flying start by posting 11.20 to coast into the evening's semis by 0.29 over Britain's Jodie Williams who is clearly taking some time to recover from last year's hamstring injury. Germany's Tatyana Lofamakanda Pinto took the first heat in 11.56 for equal third fastest from the morning with Swiss Mujinga Kambundi on the same time.

Three athletes enjoyed clean cards in the high jump, Lithuania's Airine Palsyte, Italy's Alessia Trost and Estonia's Eleriin Haas who all cleared 1.84 without mishap. 13 proceed to Saturday's final with the host country's Senni Ronkainen benefitting from the same number of failures as Chiara Vitobello of Italy in 12th.
