France’s Yann Schrub and Slovenia’s Klara Lukan shared the victories in cool and rainy conditions over 10k at the Corrida de Houilles on 21 December.
The conditions put paid to the slim hopes of a European record being set but Schrub looked in excellent shape over the distance he won gold at the 2025 European Running Championships in Brussels-Leuven, dominating the men’s race in gun-to-tape style. He broke away from a strong line-up including European 10,000m champion Dominic Lobalu in the first kilometre, winning in a solo 27:20.
Schrub’s winning time was not just a lifetime best but elevates the 29-year-old to eighth on the European all-time 10km list which is headed by Sweden’s Andreas Almgren’s European record of 26:53 from Valencia this January.
Schrub missed last week’s SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Lagoa but he has been named on a strong French team for the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee on 10 January alongside the likes of world 10,000m champion Jimmy Gressier.
Behind Schrub, Kenya’s Jacob Krop was a distant second in 27:46 with Spain’s 2016 European 5000m champion Ilias Fifa third in 27:52. Ethiopia’s world U20 cross country champion Mezgebu Sime was fourth in 27:54 with Lobalu having to settle for fifth in 27:59.
In the women’s race which began at the same time, European 10km bronze medallist Lukan broke clear from the rest of the women at the very beginning and was never headed, eventually crossing the finish-line in 31:13.
French marathon record-holder Mekdes Woldu finished second in 31:36 while European 3000m steeplechase champion Alice Finot placed seventh in 33:30 on her comeback from injury.
