Spanish 800m record holder, Mohamed Attaoui, will open his season at the Antequera Indoor Match on 17 January.
The World Athletics Indoor Tour Challenge meeting will provide an early glimpse of the form and fitness of an athlete who has emerged as a consisent medal threat on the international stage in recent years.
Over the last few years Attaoui, 24, has successfully transitioned to the senior stage, taking a silver medal at the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships and a fifth place finish at the World Championships in 2025.
Now this year as the European Athletics Championships are set to return to Birmingham on 10-16 August, the Spaniard will be looking to upgrade to gold.
After a frustrating indoor season last year, Attaoui will be looking to start his year off stronger with the chance to compete at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Kujawy Pomorze (Torun), Poland on 20-22 March.
In 2025 he won the 1500m at the Spanish Indoor Championships but placed eight at the same competition in his preferred event, 800m.
He then went on to compete at the Apeldoorn 2025 European Indoor Championships over 1500m but narrowly failed to make it past the heats, ending his indoor season.
However, he found some redemption during the outdoor season setting numerous meet records, setting a Championship Record at the Madrid 2025 European Athletics Team Championships 1st Division, and also reaching the 800m final at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where he finished fifth.
This year he will hope that redemption arc continues as he avenges the indoor season that slipped away last year.
