The mark was inside Vera Sokolova’s world and European record of 43:11.34 on the track but unfortunately it will not be ratified as it was hand-timed and there were no international judges present, unlike the previous day when Sokolova set a 20km walk world record of 1:25.08 on the roads around the Black Sea resort.
Vasilyeva, from Chuvashia and who finished fifth at last summer’s IAAF World Race Walking World Cup, comprehensively defeated the 2010 World Junior Championships 10,000m gold medallist Yelena Lashmanova, who was second in 43:41.
Despite the administrative issues, Vasilyeva’s performance in Sochi suggest that Sokolova’s junior mark, set at the 2005 European Athletics Junior Championships, could be in danger at this year’s Championships in Tallinn, Estonia, which will be from 21-24 July.
The 2010 Youth Olympic Games 10,000m walk bronze medallist Pavel Parshin was the best in junior men’s 10,000m race in 41:18.
It was a hugely impressive performance from Parshin, who only turned 17 last month and who is still young enough to compete at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France, this summer.
He slashed his personal best by over a minute and also beat the 2009 World Youth Championships silver medallist Dementiy Cheparev by nearly a minute, the latter finishing second in 42:11.
